Ptrope

Agitator
Admiral
Faster than a speeding tachyon! More powerful than a phase inverter! Able to leap tall space elevators in a single bound!

And he smells great, too!

This month, Ptrope took his nose out of his comic book collection just long enough to challenge the forum to comic book heroes! The kicker is that these are heroes that could exist within the everyday universe of Star Trek, not just characters in its fiction - heroes that starship captains read about in their morning briefs, not just when they're looking for a restroom for some 'me time.' ;) And the folks came through big! So let's flip open those pages, skip the ads for x-ray specs and sea monkeys, and tell us who the winner is of Crisis in Infinite Alpha Quadrants! While you're at it, vote for two - it's a big galaxy!

Admiral2

Albertese

"Sometimes duty outweighs orders!"

B.J.

Buck Rogers

A 24th-century descendant of Tony Stark, in civilian battle armor that is equipped with Micro Phasers; his omni-beam emitter can generate tractor beams; and his flight systems are based on Micro-impulse and Micro-warp drive engines.

Klaus

Praetor

Disgraced Starfleet Ensign Nick Locarno was relegated to rather mundane recon missions as a scout after his Academy actions resulted in the death of a fellow cadet. On a routine scout mission, he discovered Orion pirates raiding a pre-warp planet. Locarno tried to stop them, but crashed on the planet. He received a huge dose of warp radiation poisoning, which made him glow blue. He discovered that the energy he emitted could be channeled through the shard of a dilithium crystal from his shuttle's warp core; this allowed him to shape the energy to his mind's will. He fitted the crystal into his Academy ring and ended up having to use his new-found powers to fight off the Orion pirates to protect the locals, who are at a roughly 20th-century-Earth level and believed him to be some kind of superhero.

After being rescued by Starfleet, it was decided that the best way to contain the cultural contamination and protect the primitive planet is to actually make him a superhero. They equipped him with a proper ring and costume, and sent him back to the planet as 'Transwarp.' He can fly unharmed through almost any environment by shrouding himself in a subspace field, travel at warp 9+ speeds on his own - faster than any starship speed record - as well as make energy constructs with the will of his mind. His one weakness is that he must recharge himself from a warp core every 24 hrs.

What? NO comments? Well, we can't have that ...

I was very happy with the turn-out this month; when I set the challenge, I didn't know what kind of response it was going to get, and I was pleasantly surprised by how positive it was. I was also surprised by how nearly all of us seemed to 'package' our entries - most are presented as comics, even though the conceit of the challenge was that these were not comic heroes in the Trek universe, but actual beings whose abilities set them apart from the heroes and villains that populate the Alpha quadrant (as well as the others) - the sort of folks that starship captains would be more likely to read about in their morning briefs, than in magazines for when they seek out the elusive restroom for some 'me time' ;).

I voted for B.J. and Praetor. Not only did I get a kick out of the concept of ¡El Sombrero!, the execution is spot-on, right down to Freddy, the Wonder Tribble . I also like the back story for Transwarp - it's a great idea for an existing character, and a neat twist on both Green Lantern and the Prime Directive.

Admiral2's Outstanding Squad is also ... outstanding; this isn't the first time he's given us a great, dynamic comic cover, and I'd love to know the story behind this team of adventurers. Not only are they reminiscent of the Fantastic Four, they also have the same distribution of syllables!

I like Captain Federation's linework and the many nods to TOS icons; I also like her dress, which seems to be a combo of the Kirk-era dresses with Pike-era details :bolian:. Charlie-X has so many parallels to a certain professer of -men that one has to wonder where that could go - hopefully he wouldn't end up in a wheelchair (or whatever that thing was that Pike was in!); his powers also remind me of Proteus, one of my favorite villains.

Also cool to see Marauder Mo; I can just imagine Quark curled up on a rainy day (which would be most of them!), thrilling to his adventures, and taking the accounting quiz at the end of each issue! Vulcania intrigues me - I don't know if it was Klaus's intention to be ambiguous, but I could see her as either heroine or villain (but the bald pate makes me think she's a bad-ass :)), and Buck Rogers's guy - does he have a name? Would "Iron" be too low-tech in the 24th C.? - is a logical, if you'll excuse the term, use of the sort of technology that would be available to the industrious industrialist.

Great job, everyone! Thanks for participating, and good luck! I'd like to also give a shout out to The Lensman, who had a great comic cover, which unfortunately was ineligible for this competition - be sure to check it out here.

Hm, I'm going to have to think about it again before voting. ALL of them are very very good! :bolian:

Oh man. So many worthy entries. Albertese truest to the Federation. Klaus and Ptrope the most elegantly executed. Praetor the best developed character.

I want the Ptrope action figure. Therefore it gets my vote.

I really love Shawnster's Marauder Mo. It's great to see something that ties into an obscure element of the show so nicely.

But I bet B.J's El Sombrero takes the cake, what with all the bizarre sombrero culture that has been flourishing here.

Oh well, doesn't really matter who wins, I just had a blast participating. Best o' luck to us all!

DANG! You mean I could have voted for more than one?!?!? I did not know that.

I was totally blown away by Admiral2's Outstanding Squad. I think partially because he didn't post a preview. It was a very nice surprise.

Thank you! That actually wasn't a conscious decision. I literally finished the drawing last minute and didn't have time to post a backstory.

Anywho, I vote for Praetor, as promised.

Daaaaang! This is the closest race I can remember!

Anyway, on a whim I googled "batman sombrero", and I found out there really is an El Sombrero comic book character! But he does not share the stylin' headgear of my character! :p

Wow...we got a 3 way tie going (as of this posting, anyway). What happens in that case?

....and as of this post, the poll is closed, and it's a 3-way tie between Albertese, Shawnster, and myself! Since I had a recent win (December's challenge), I'll let Albertese and Shawnster fight it out over who gets to pick March's challenge.

Not necessarily. ShamelessMcBundy voted for three instead of just two. Without his votes Albertese would be the winner. Just sayin'. :shifty:

Actually I didn't get around to voting. I didn't see the poll was closing today. :( I'm still not sure who I would have voted for though.

Holy Crap! A three way tie!?!? Has this ever happened before? Is there any precedent for this? I've never won one of these before, but i do have an idea for a next month's challenge. Does Shawnster have anything? WHAT DO WE DO NOW!?!?! Ptrope, Help! Provide us lowly thralls guidance!

--Alex

I've been considering what would be the best, most fair option to determine a winner. It's great that so many people participated, and so many people voted, and so many people tied ;). But that doesn't give us a challenger for March, and I'm sure everyone is eager to find out what the challenge could be. Each of the top scorers is more than deserving, and each is, I'm sure, equally eager to put his peers to the test.

With B.J. graciously recusing himself, that makes it a little easier, but we're still left with a dilemma, and I don't want to ask either of the remaining frontrunners to give up his seat after having performed so admirably. The fact that the polling technology leaves a little to be desired, in that it has only the options of "1 vote" or "any number," so that offering 2 votes per person is largely an honor system that also relies upon every voter to read the instructions carefully - some voted for only one entry, some voted for more than 2. But the votes are all legitimate, and we still have two legitimate contenders, so I think the only way to settle this fairly is to have a run-off vote for the remaining contenders, giving each voter only one vote (obviously ;)), which will end in 24 hours (the shortest time we can run a poll on this board software). Sound fair? B.J., if you want to compete in the run-off, as is your right, please PM me ASAP, before I create the new poll.

Thanks, guys! And congrats to all of our participants - it was a great race!
