We have definitely got you covered this month!

The Lensman was in need of some tunes, so when he challenged us this time, he said those tunes were from our favorite future songsters and it was up to us to track 'em down and spruce 'em up, with nifty album (everybody remember those?) covers. Well, it worked - we churned out a whole studio full of art!

Now it's up to you - buy 'em with credits, borrow 'em with your good reputation or download 'em from some shady tribble-trader, but whatever you do, vote for the TWO that are going to accompany you on that next trip to the Delta quadrant. We'll have one winner who may not get a Grammy, but will definitely win the honor of creating the August art challenge!

Love the entries this month! They made me keep working on my 3D model of the jewel case - once this is complete, I have a strong urge to render all of them in a disorganized stack on the desktop (with Klaus's poster, as well ;)). I voted for Kail and The Lensman (isn't it "Spectre?" ;) ) - I really like the styles and creativity.

Man, this was a tough one! Ultimately I went with B.J. and Forbin. B.J.'s entry is inspired and Forbin's is hilarious.

If it were possible to give largo an award for sheer productivity, then I certainly would. So many great covers!

Ptrope, if I didn't have a spelling error somewhere then it wouldn't be an authentic "Lensman" piece of art! ;)

Great job everyone!

I voted Lensman and B.J., as the two I'd most like to see in my own collection. :D Great job everyone!

All great work, and tough choice! It's been a while since we've voted for more than one, but I went with Ptrope and The Lensman.

i also voted BJ and The Lensman.
which would've been a great late-70s-trucker-comedy.

I did Largo -- because it is SOOO timely.

And Tom Hendricks was funny, and very much matching the photo.

Klaus was my#3...

I couldnt enter this month. I would have done the TOS males recreating the beatles anbey road cover. I really liked lensmans entry, they were all really clever entries

Congratulations, B.J.! I look forward to listening to your album while watching The Wizard of Atoz ;).

Thanks, everyone who entered - a great showing this month!

Things kept distracting me so I never worked upon my submission. I would have labeled it (in one variation or another) "M'Ress Sings 'Memories' & Other Melodies from the Musical 'Cats'".

Sincerely,

Bill

Well, I tried it - since The Lensman so helpfully provided both the front and back art for a CD, I gave it a shot, rendering it in a case.

lensman_the_phasers_56hrs_800_by_ptrope-d94a9o6.jpg

This render took 56 hours! I need to rethink the materials on the case - this image was raytraced, so the light had to be traced through:
1. The front surface of the lid
2. The back surface of the lid
3. The outside surface of the lower case
4. The inside surface of the lower case
5. The reflection off the table
6. The shadows cast from the transparent materials onto and through the opposite sides of the objects
7. Refraction through all the transparent objects
8. Reflection off both the inside and outside surfaces of all transparent objects
9. Specular highlights on transparent, reflective materials and with indirect lighting enabled

So, basically, everything I could do to torture a renderer, I did. After it had hit >24 hours, I started rethinking materials - the next try will be with all interior transparent surfaces without reflection OR refraction, only enough specular to see that the surfaces are there. After 48 hours and still rendering, I took the time to remodel the entire lid more accurately, and now I need to match up the bottom of the case. I may still try to do this with all the entries as a group 'still life,' if I can get the rendering time down to <4 hours ;).

I'd be better off just printing all the entries, putting them in ACTUAL jewel cases, and photographing them ... ;)
