Films/TV that could have been Doctor Who but weren't.

Just realised I totally forgot about "Lifeforce" which is a straight up UNIT story albeit with added nudity.
Check out the radio thriller Outbreak of Fear. Even had Nick Courtney as a Scotland Yard superintendent whose cover story falls apart, making him suspicious until he eventually admits he's actually a British Army Brigadier heading a special unit that deals with odd events.

As he was in the Radio 4 rep I imagine it was written before he was cast (BTW, it is also a Frost spin-off as a central character is on temporary reassignment from Denton, Frost's patch, and it's written by the Frost novelist). But possibly the line "Brigadier, actually." was a late rewrite.

UFO/Space 1999 (minus the moon hurtled out of orbit) could easily be a 21st century UNIT series, especially after all the alien contact Earth had during the 20th century in the Who Universe

UFO fits better with Torchwood, with the secret base and all the implied horniness.

And you just know Jack would have Ianto in one of those fishnet shirts the male Skydiver crew wore if he got a chance.
