Films that sucked, but everyone else liked...

Yesterday I was reminded yet again how I have to be comfortable with being of a minority opinion.

I work at Future Shop and yesterday they had Star Trek (2009) as a demo movie on one of the big screen TVs on display. It was quiet late in the afternoon and so a few people were watching some scenes from the film. Some asked why I didn't seem interested. I replied that I didn't like the film and in fact that I liked nothing about the film. I really didn't elaborate much beyond that.

My question here, though, isn't to discuss this particular film, but rather to ask folks if they've ever found themselves in a similar situation.

Has there ever been a film (or films) that was well received and most if not everyone around you seemed to like and yet you didn't like or couldn't stand?

Jackass, Titanic, All the Harry Potter films...All The Pirates Of The Caribbean movies.

I don't think Jackass was well recieved...but I know alot of people who liked that movie & loved the TV show...why? Is beyond me.

I didn't dislike Titanic. I just don't think it was the be all and end all so many other people seemed to think.

Titanic, Blair Witch Project, Harry Potter films (though they make good Rifftrax).

The Matrix, just about anything Russell Crowe has ever been in, Dreamgirls, all three Spiderman films, X-Men 1 and 2.

The English Patient (just DIE already!!!)
 Well said. I saw this movie on a date and she thought it was quite something. I was biting my tongue not to say what I really thought because I didn't want to offend her.

I didn't care for Curse of the Black Pearl and actually like the other films more. I'm a fan of arc storytelling. I'm not sure in this case the arc makes a ton of sense, but I don't know why everyone went so ga-ga over the first film.

I've heard some people say that Goldmember is better than The Spy Who Shagged Me. While Michael Caine is a significant factor, I can't agree overall. The second film is easily my favorite of the franchise.

I think Star Trek '09 was overrated and a bit weak/shallow story-wise, but I can't say I don't like it.

If Transformers is considered liked, then I'll beg to differ. Given a choice I'd take the animated film in a heartbeat.

I preferred the second Hellboy movie to the first, which seems to be a bit at odds with popular opinion (?).

The LORD OF THE RINGS movies. ALL three needed at least a half hour cut out and yet on home video they are even longer!

Anything with Jim Carey.

From years ago, the Whitney Houston film The Bodyguard. Walked out before the end. At the time the entire world seemed to love that film.

Mike Farley, even Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind? When Jim Carey doesn't play Jim Carey, he's far better.

I'm going to go with Elf. It's a Will Farrell movie, so it's dumb, then it gets dumbed down for children. But I know way too many people who love it and, quite possibly, think it's the best Christmas movie ever.

The LORD OF THE RINGS movies.

THANK YOU. No movie has ever made me feel as alienated from the moviegoing public as "The Lord of the Rings - The Fellowship of the Ring". A friend dragged me to it and I thought it was one of the most boring, pretentious movies I've ever seen. All of the characters were annoying and had lame dialog. There was no humour or anyone to care about or empathize with.

I perked up a little during an action sequence towards the end, but found the rest to be an excruciating slog. At the end, which was obviously meant to make people excited for the next chapter, I just felt like I never want to waste hours of my life on these dull characters and their stupid quest ever again. I still haven't been able to bring myself to watch the other two, although the hype arouses my curiosity.

I was further soured on the franchise when Internet hype propelled "Return of the King" to the top 5 on IMDB's top 250. I know it's just a subjective list and shouldn't be taken seriously, but seeing thousands of people voting it higher than classic movies of the 20s-90s with brilliant dialogue, direction, and writing, and REAL characters and stories that actually had some profound insights about the human condition was a little depressing.

I was also saddened to see people crapping on "Star Trek: Nemesis" in 2002 as they celebrated "The Two Towers" as heralding Lord of the Rings becoming the new supreme geek motion picture franchise. All this "fuck Star Trek, all hail Lord of the Rings" sentiment infuriated me. Yes, it was a mediocre Star Trek movie, but I thought Star Trek deserved better than to be replaced by something as lame as Lord of the Rings.

X-Men 1 and 2.

Blasphemy! X2= greatest superhero movie ever: now and forever! :klingon:

Although I wouldn't exactly say it 'sucked' I have to mention "Aliens" (the recent Cameron ratings thread reminded me of this). I think it's an ok sci-fi action movie. But IMHO some of the dialogs are unbearable and it's rather predictable in many places. Again, I don't think it's bad but I also don't get why so many people seem to like it so much. I think Alien and Alien 3 are substantially more interesting and Cameron's own Terminator movies are far superior as far as I'm concerned.

AI was the first one that came to mind. I've been flamed on this board and elsewhere for stating my views regarding that film. I wouldn't say "everyone liked" because a lot of people agree with me that the ending 20 minutes destroyed what was otherwise potentially the best SF film of that year (potentially the decade). But enough people got mad at me for stating my view that I felt in the minority opinion.

The thread's mostly about movies, but I'd be remiss if I didn't also say Firefly. I can't stand that show, and I find it so pretentious as to be almost unwatchable. Yet I love the cast - I have card-carrying crushes on all the female cast members through their work on other shows (Glau on Terminator, Baccarin on V, Staite and Torres on anything they happen to be on at the time), plus I've been a fan of Ron Glass since Barney Miller, and I think Fillion is great (and he's a fellow Albertan, too). All the ingredients for a fine souffle were there, but for some reason it came out tasting like a mud pie. My opinion is such a minority one that I actually quit Trek BBS for 6 months in part due to my stating my honest opinion about the show and being flamed to the point where I said to hell with this place for awhile.

Hooray, I am no longer the lone voice of dissent! :) I don't think it's terrible either, but I was really disappointed watching it again in 2009, for some of the same reasons that you were. I also think the first two Terminator movies and the original "Alien" are much better.

I'm not sure about "Alien 3", though. I don't remember much about it except that hilarious scene where this guy is yelling something like, "GET THAT FOOLISH WOMAN OUT OF HERE!" right before an offscreen alien pulls him up and eviscerates him. I LOVE comedic action movie deaths like that!

23Skiddo, having just finished watching "Firefly" for the first time not so long ago, I can see where you're coming from. There are certain episodes that I like a lot and I enjoy all the characters, but it can be maddeningly inconsistent.

There are also episodes that run on way too long with plots that aren't very engaging and make me wish every episode wasn't about 45 minutes. I like the episodes that focus on the characters more, but there are few that have them trapped in really dull plots. I also can't stand that damn Chinese swearing. There was a novelty to it at first, but it got annoying as hell eventually. I also thought the big reveal of the Alliance's darkest secret in the movie was kinda lame, but the movie was good overall.

Why didn't you just ignore the people who were flaming you?

Movies that I thought sucked:

The Lord of the Rings trilogy
the Harry Potter suckfest
Pirates of the Caribbean movies
The Dark Knight and the other Batman movie.

Star Trek was ok but could have been better.
