TrekMovie has an update on the status for pre-production.

the official start date for production is January 15th, 2012

the script has "been done for a while" and they are currently working on the 3rd draft

construction has already started for some of the new sets.

ILM has already started work on some of the effects shots

Abrams himself traveled to Hawaii to scout a location which is being seriously considered for a "jungle planet"

it is described as "bigger" in scope than the 2009 Star Trek film

What do you think?

"Bigger in scope" sounds a little worrying (as in - What are they gonna blow up THIS time?). But, I'll wait and see. Thanks for that info.

I wonder what the "famous Trek location" being filmed in the LA museum's gonna be? Starfleet headquarters?

I don´t know this place, but my friend told me that the California Science Center looks cool. And the Los Angeles Art Musuem too. It could be a Starfleet headquarters because I think we will not see the Academy again.

'The Way To Eden'? Oh. Ghad. No.

Don't think TOS actually showed us many jungle worlds, but might have mentioned a whole bunch. Didn't have the budget for it - the story gioes that they blew the entire season budget for greenery just doing 'The Apple' and, afterwards, couldn't afford even a potted posie.

Please Abrams, moon of Endor, NO!

seriously.

Many people bet on Ceti Alpha V, Khan, but I think we'll be sure if Khan will appear after the last edition of the comic star trek ongoing

could anybody explain what "3rd draft" means? Three different stories or three different endings?

Oh jungle planet! So we'll be getting Ewoks too. It's a long time since we had them in Star Trek. :D

When someone writes a novel, screenplay or whatever, their first attempt at it is their first draft. And further attempt or revisions would be their second, third or fourty-fifth draft, depending on how many they had done.

Maybe. But why would they be so cryptic about that? We've seen bits and pieces of Starfleet headquarters, before. Is it that big a deal?

Calling it a "famous" Trek location is kind of an odd word to use, too.

Mabye it's a place that was often talked about in Star Trek but never seen. Or, maybe it was a vital setting to a favorite Trek episode and we'll all recognize it. Meh. I have no idea, but I'll still probably spend the next ten minutes thinking about it, anyway.

Los Angeles Art Musuem have futuristc designs. My guess is the StarFleet headquarters

If I'm not mistaken, there's a Museum in LA (previously known as the Hollywood Entertainment Museum) which is home to many famous film and television sets, including some of the major standing sets from TNG.

I'm guessing that like many Trek productions before it, that Trek XII might well be saving a few bucks by redressing some of TNG sets to stand in as the interior of some other ship.
