Filming in Toronto (Canada) and not set on the Enterprise....

Here is some news to mull over: http://comicbook.com/2016/04/22/cbss-new-star-trek-tv-series-will-film-in-toronto-this-fall/

And another possible tidbit: http://moviepilot.com/posts/3874185

Add that to two possibly conflicting rumours: that the series is set between the TOS film era and TNG and that it's an anthology type series of some kind set in different eras. Possibly the first season will be set after TUC and before TNG and then later seasons will be set in other eras each season.

It appears reasonably firm the new series will be connected to the prime continuity and not the JJverse. :techman:

I remember learning, many moons ago, that actors and creators of shows and movies like working in Canada because our Neighbors to the North and the Canadian Media do not have the same "enthusiasm" for Star Sightings and Autograph Antics. (Actors don't get stalked and hounded as much)

I also believe it is less expensive and just as easy to film in Canadian cities and studios. Lots of good film comes out of Canada. I hope this series is another example of that good stuff.

"Right", in a way, also, as Shatner is from Canada.

Well your link just repeats the 'carry on from where TUC left off' quote and the existing rumour about an anthology series - it doesn't offer any corroboration that it will be prime universe at all. As your first link says, no story or casting details have been released. Until they are, setting is a mystery.

The main points are the series is to be filmed in Toronto and it won't be set on the (or a) Enterprise.

Wow... Star Trek filmed in the same place as Dark Matter and Killjoys. I imagine it won't be long before Roger Cross and Mike Dopud show up in Trek.

Only if you assume that that that one oft-cited rumor is true. Just because other sources keep parroting it, in the absence of any actual "news," doesn't make it more any more credible.

There's nothing "reasonably firm" about any of this. It's all just empty gossip and speculation so far.

"No story or casting details have been released." Period.

Yeah, the story seems to be just rumors. Odd that they would have booked studio space that far in advance and before an annoucement. I'll leave it as such until we hear from official sources.

That said, Canada is good for TV and movies not only because of the tax breaks, but because when the US dollar is strong (as it is now) it tends to go a lot further in shooting stuff here. When the US dollar is weaker than the Canadian dollar or at parity, stuff tends to be filmed more at home. We're nice, but a studio's bottom line trumps that.

In any case, it looks like for TV, Toronto gets the hardcore sci-fi stuff (Killjoys, Dark Matter, Orphan Black..), which Vancouver is home right now to the superhero stuff (a trio of CW shows, Deadpool, etc.). 'Course, speaking as an actor AND sci-fi nerd in Calgary, it just makes me want to move to another city that isn't filming westerns, sci-fi westerns, and DiCaprio vanity pieces...

It's not so much that we don't have as much enthusiasm, but that it boils down to the fact that we are a big Country that is very spread out, so in certain cases, they'll be filming in an area where the chance of being recognized is very low. My area has had an increased of productions being filmed here as of late, and almost always, the case is the actors will have said afterwards that the experience was very good for them, due in part that they don't have to worry about being spotted. They find it to be a good working environment for them, and they also enjoy the environment itself which is a plus.

Thanks for the clarification, Owain. My understanding was that (according to the actors and creators) Canadians, in general, are more respectful and less inclined to mob a celeb at a sighting, or bother them at dinner or leisure, with requests for autographs and such...no insult intended to the enthusiasm part!

:techman: :)

Oh, I'm sure that's an added benefit. I think they find it more relaxing as it's one less thing they have to be worried about. It certainly helps that overall, unless they're in a big city, that they don't even have to worry about papparazzi. We've had multiple big name actors announced to be filming in our city, which producers and actors really like to the point of nicknaming it Hollywood Further North, and they can simply walk the streets downtown without fear of being recognized or mobbed, or even having their picture taken. In the end, that can really make a difference to their well-being. So, you're right at that point. We have a different mindset. There's only been one actor so far who's said they didn't like filming up here, but that's more sour grapes as they thought they'd be filming in Toronto.

Why are all my favourite TV shows filmed in Canada? I see the same guest actors everywhere.

Mind you the shows I watch are in Vancouver, not Toronto.
