Filming in Toronto (Canada) and not set on the Enterprise....

There was a funny moment on THE 4400 (set in Seattle, filmed in Vancouver) where the heroes had to take a road trip to . . . Vancouver. "You up for a drive to Vancouver?"

Little bit of an in-joke there?

Vancouver: Lucifer
Wow, I had no idea Lucifer was shot in Vancouver. So was Tom Ellis' other show Rush, which also took place in L.A.

And then there was that time my city stood in for Vancouver, which was a riot given it showed the horizon with the rockies, and we're nowhere near the rockies.
Jackie Chan's Rumble in the Bronx was shot in Vancouver and they didn't even try to hide the coastline or the mountains.

So I guess the fact this is filming in Canada means we can expect a lot of the same kinds of forest planet we saw on the Stargates.
Reign is shot in the outskirts of Toronto. If you watch that show you'll get some idea of what to expect from location shooting.

I had just assumed Lucifer was filmed in LA. They did a really good job of covering that up.

It's the sort of thing I realize more in retrospect. I don't think we got as many of the sort of exterior shooting you'd expect to see in LA, like the kind of Beverly Hills mansions you'd expect to show up often in a show like this.

^ We do see a lot of clubs and homes with a certain look which is what made me assume it was L.A. Now I'm trying to think back at the location shooting.

Girlfriends' Guide to Divorce is another show that's shot in Vancouver but takes place in L.A., as was The L Word. And The L.A. Complex and was shot in Toronto. All three are convincing as taking place in L.A.

It's amazing what you can get away with when you use the right locations, the right shots that don't show too much, warm lighting and carefully placed plants.

Trek should do well if they need to dress up the environment. And they've got good CGI to take care of the Vasquez Rocks. :p

Heck, the first DAREDEVIL movie was set in Hell's Kitchen, New York, but filmed in Los Angeles . ...

And I believe that all the "Japan" scenes in the most recent GODZILLA were actually filmed in Canada as well.

It's rather distracting if you are familiar with a certain place, and a movie has a scene set in that place, but you can tell that it was not made in that place, especially if you recognize the place where it was actually made. And I just used the word "place" enough times for this week...

Yeah, it was distracting seeing so many familiar Vancouver actors (Garry Chalk, Hiro Kanagawa, Terry Chen, Brian Markinson, Ty Olsson) in the scenes supposedly taking place in Japan. Kinda spoiled the illusion. (And it's frustrating that they made a Godzilla movie with scenes set in Japan and didn't actually shoot in Japan.)

I was watching Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol and they were in Moscow. Then Mike Dopud shows up.

At least these things convincing until you see certain actors.

^ The new Daredevil doesn't even shoot in Hell's Kitchen because it doesn't look enough like Hell's Kitchen.

Hell, it hasn't looked like the Hell's Kitchen of the old Frank Miller comics for decades. True story: when I was writing the novelization of the DAREDEVIL movie, I wasted an afternoon walking around the real Hell's Kitchen, trying to soak up the atmosphere, but I quickly realized that the scuzzy Hell's Kitchen of the comics (which were even then at least a decade old) had long since given way to gentrification and Giuliani.

In the end, I ignored reality and just described the godforsaken urban cesspool of the comics and pre-production art . . ..

I've always thought it was a cool idea for the Daredevil TV show to use the Chitauri invasion in The Avengers to explain why Hell's Kitchen has become run-down and crime-ridden again. In fact, I thought it'd be a cool idea even before they actually did it.

For me it's sighting Stargate and Battlestar Galactica actors. For example, any time I see Aaron Douglas (Chief Tyrol) or Alessandro Juliani (Gaeta) I know the show is filming in Canada.

Or Michael (Tigh) Hogan, who's just started turning up in a recurring role on 12 Monkeys.

Actually, they use a pretty substantial amount of CGI to "fix" locations in non-genre shows where you wouldn't really expect special effects.

Heh, my favorite Toronto show was Forever Knight

No, that was Vancouver, on the other end of the continent from Toronto. They're as far apart as Los Angeles and New York City. Vancouver is just north of Seattle, in a Pacific Northwest climate; Toronto is on the Great Lakes, close to Buffalo and Rochester, NY and not too far from Detroit (which is why so many RoboCop productions have shot there).

Yeah, Toronto has more in common with NYC. They'll likely be using it as a stand-in for SanFran and Starfleet Academy in particular. And yes, they couldn't be any more different. Very different climates. You'd have to travel up a bit further north to get forest landscapes, which they might do if the need arises. We also have lots of lakes.

Jackie Chan's Rumble in the Bronx was shot in Vancouver and they didn't even try to hide the coastline or the mountains.

Heh, I remember watching that and seeing it made me do a double-take. There are mountains in the Bronx? Who knew?! ;)

Yeah, Toronto has more in common with NYC.

Which makes it odd that Fringe, which shot its first season in NYC (often doubling as Boston), moved to Vancouver for the rest of the series. Toronto would probably have made more sense. (One of the clearest signs of the move was that the windows of Nina Sharp's office in Massive Dynamic got much smaller, since they could no longer show off the real Manhattan skyline and had to settle for a fake backdrop.)

They'll likely be using it as a stand-in for SanFran and Starfleet Academy in particular.

We don't know if they'll set scenes on Earth at all at this point.

I remember when Fringe and Caprica were airing at the same time and they used the same building in Vancouver for Harvard and the school on Caprica. That really took me out of the show the first time they showed it.

Then there are all the buildings that the Vancouver Central Library has stood in for. It was Caprica City Hall, "Other Side" Fringe Division Headquarters, a restaurant in The Flash, and countless other things. I used to think that included Continuum's Vancouver Police HQ, but I know better after a rewatch. In fact, it turns out that Lucifer's LAPD office scenes are filmed in the same location as Continuum's VPD scenes.

Hey, that's a neat site to browse around -- though it's much richer with Vancouver locations than Toronto ones, and it only lists one of the movies shot here in Cincinnati, so I guess it's incomplete. Turns out there's actually a Vancouver location called Central City, and it's been used in The Flash. How could they not?
