Fighters ?

The Typhoon, why would you want that old bucket of bolts!? It's Generaton 4.5.
If there could be a swept wing fighter in Star Trek what Generation of fighter would it be?

JDW

Well, OT though it is...

The Typhoon is a gorgeous aircraft for one, there are very few Jets whose lines are so instantly appealing to me. They are used by the RAF and I'm British, which is another reason.

As for it's ability in air combat it has never been tested. Presumably superior to the F-15, F-18 and their Russian counterparts and surpassed only by the F-22 (an aircraft so expensive even the USAF can't really afford it) and whatever the Russians come up with next, though the Su-47 is a contender of course.

The only true "Gen 5" fighters due to enter service are the F-22 and the F-35, one of which is still in development. How much of an advantage these aircraft really provide over aircraft like the Typhoon (or for that matter any 4th Gen fighter) will have to be balanced with their cost.

Of course the RAF get both the Typhoon and the F-35, so its win-win for aircraft fans in Britain. :)

Speaking Of Fighters...

Here is one that was designed for my Starfleet Rangers fanflick

Here is the original artist concept....

Re: Speaking Of Fighters...

No offense to your work k'riq sa, but why the wings??

Maybe he means to operate both in an atmosphere as well as in space?

Well I figured as much - but then why a straight wing? There has never been a true supersonic aircraft with one as it creates too much drag, you need that leading edge sweep.

Logically also with Starfleet technology a wing is rather inefficient anyhow - it seems they possess the ability to use impulse engines to sustain flight completely in an atmosphere without the use of aerofoils at all.

Yeah, Starfleet doesn't seem to use wings very often. The closest they get are wing-like protrusions for the nacelles (Delta Flyer, Insurrection scout) or deployable fins that wouldn't do squat for flight (NX-01 Pod, Argo Cargo Shuttle)

So there's no true supersonic aircraft with straight wings? Really?

D'oh! I fogot the F-104 - OK there were some! Perhaps no SAFE supersonic aircraft....;)

Point stands though - ALMOST all supersonic aircraft use sweep in their wings because of drag. The F-104 in fact has quite a swept leading edge, despite the overall straight pattern of the wing, the back of the F-22's wings are fairly straight after all , not to mention deltas.

I still would believe the fighter more than anything with no wing going with trek tech!

I'd sooner compare a Danube-class to a fast patrol ship, as seen in the Star Fleet Universe - which can be made into civilianised workboats, that aren't too far off from what a Danube can do.

Ironically, neither the Federation nor Federal Republic of Aurora actually fly their own workboats - save for those built in Orion space, and those bought by UFP civilians from other empires - since the Feds and FRA in that timeline turned down the option of building PFs.

As for fighters, the craft which serve such a purpose in the SFU are pretty much all flown off of carriers or planet-based bases (with the sliiiiiiiight exception of Hiver 'frigates', which are the size of fighters, but built two sizes smaller than anyone else's frigates due to that species' diminutive size).
