Ferengi Episodes

Yes! to Ferengis. The drag one is just a poor episode. But the Ferengi get to satirize humanity (greed and sexism) and Shimerman is the actor who sounds most normal - like a real person - in his line delivery, in all of BermanTrek, IMO.

One thing about Profit and Lace I thought was really interesting was the complete absence of a medical ethics discussion. Quark strolls into the infirmary and asks for a sex change and Bashir says, "Sure!" Did he tell Bashir it was to trick someone, or did Quark tell him he'd always really felt trapped in a man's body?

In the modern world, I'd expect that you should probably at least see a mental health professional--at least once--before having your genitals rearranged. Apparently in the future it's so effortless that people do it without any questions asked. Hell, Bashir probably didn't even get paid, except, maybe, in free holosuite time.

Maybe people take vacations as other genders. But regardless of the interpretation, Bashir saw Quark's junk and applied godlike technology to it like it was just another day at the office.

When the series first started the ferengi episodes didn't appeal to me. I thought "The Nagus" was stupid, though I loved the actor. I just thought they were too silly, and I liked my stories to be serious. I did however love aspects of "Rules of Acquisition". Over time those Ferengie themed episodes grew on me. I still can't stand "Profit & Lace" - but most of them aren't that bad, and some of them are quite good. They're just another ingrediant in the DS9 mix, that I enjoy a lot more when I rewatch the series.

Personally, what I wanted to see in "The Magnificent Ferengi" was a showdown between a few Ferengi Marauders and some Dominion ships - I always wanted to see what a Marauder was really capable of because in TNG we only ever seemed to see them disabled, or attacking an unprepared ship, similar to how we never really got to see how powerful a Romulan warbird was.

Other than that, I found the Ferengi episodes okay - not up there in my Top 10, but not at the bottom either...

That'd have been cool too... it would've been funny, too, if the rescue had actually wound up costing Quark money when they sued for restitution.

I think we'd have seen Marauders in WYLB if they hadn't run out of money for new FX shots and CGI models... I mean, you'd suppose Nagus Rom's first act would've been to have hired a fleet to join in the Allied advance (bet he got Ferenginar a formerly-Cardassian planet or two in the peace negotiations too :) ).
