Our previous cat had a neck wound, so the vet put her in a cone. We swapped that hard plastic cone for a smaller one made of softer material. It worked "okay", but we swapped that out for a wide collar my wife made of thick cloth. That worked better than the cone at preventing her from digging at the wound.
