Feline Follies

Hello Cat People (fanciers) My cat and I are having a really hard summer. I am really starting to feel like the worst pet parent ever! I know I can't control these things. But my cat needs a break from things happening to her! First she hurt her left front paw and lost two claws. The vet now thinks one will not grow back because of pad damage! :(. The other claw is coming back slowly. Then she had to go in for a tooth cleaning and had to have a tooth pulled. It was really awful because she had a shot for pain that lasted several days. But only two days before our trip we were taking. Didn't want to leave her but had to. We had a family friend come and take care of her. And she did a good job. But it was hard to be away from her. Add two heat waves into all of this the one a few weeks ago never got below 100 and starting tomorrow another one is going to hit us for 3 days! This is crazy for our area. We don't get this! Not since 2009! We don't have AC so it is back to soaking towels in water and freezing them again. It is hard on her though she is 13. I am trying not to complain, I am just feeling very upset about all the things my cat is having to deal with. Never had to deal with a tooth being pulled or losing claws, hope to never again, she was really miserable for a few days. Though, she was more herself when we got back. Which was good. Anyone else have a lot of things keep happening to their cat like in such a short period of time? I just don't want anything else to happen to her. You know. It is not easy being a pet parent sometimes! Thanks for listening, really glad there is a cat chat on here, really need it! Thanks.

I know how you feel! My cat is my baby, and since I work from home, I spend more time with him than anyone, even my husband.

Cats are a lot like people in some ways. When we get old, everything seems to break all at once.

Getting the tooth removed was probably a really good decision, because dental problems cause an awful lot of problems for cats--or any animal. The tooth can rot, which keeps them from eating, and infection can spread quickly to the organs. She will probably perk up considerably now the bad tooth is gone. She's 13--she's an old lady ( I know the feeling!) so accidents and injuries will happen more frequently. As long as she gets her yearly vet-check, and maybe a dental cleaning every few years, she should be fine.

Keep Miss Kitty in the shaded parts of the house, with a ceiling fan, and cold water nearby should be enough to keep her going through the summer--but what misery! I live in the Houston area and it's hot for 2/3 of the year and very humid. Everyone has A/C AND ceiling fans; many of us don't have fireplaces, though. Since the environment is changing, maybe you should look into getting A/C--at least a window unit, or something.

Yes, I bought one. The liners are fantastic but the litter box , while great, did not solve the problem like I hoped it would. Big waste of money.

I think I might completely replace Junior's litter box with a big Rubbermaid container.

We had a LitterMaid self-cleaning box. Merlyn would hit the scooper while it was moving and eventually broke it. Now we just use simple / cheap boxes. Three of them: one in the basement, one at the top of the stairs to the basement, and one in the upstairs bathroom.

Thank you for what you said, it helps. Thanks for the input. You and your kitty take care as well..

I put regular sized litter boxes inside shallow totes and those are on a tarp in the basement (5) and another in the upstairs bathroom. I take the tarp out every so often and shake it out and when I scoop the litter boxes I just pour excess stuff from the totes back into the boxes.
