He's got a severe case of "dog tongue".
Sally will do that too, along with trying to nose the keyboard off the desk.
Funny! But I'm certain that if a person really died, the cat (or dog) could tell the difference. Loss of body heat, lack of breathing their more sensitive ears would more readily notice, the odors of cell death long before we humans could detect, and so on. Shoot, they can probably tell the difference between "faking" death, plain old sleep and a catatonic (sorry) collapse. Now, HOW they might react, well, that will be dependent upon the individual pet. I'm suspect her pets merely thought, "Meh, the food giver is just doing one of her weird things again."
Still, it WAS amusing, especially LuLu *the short legged cat) grooming her!

my sister had a Devon Rex (which had very large ears). My brother called is a space-alien cat.

My cat loved her gifts a new wide scratch pad and a harness. She also got some toys and food. What did your cat get?
My cat got a mouse with a Santa hat but enjoyed a wadded up piece of paper more.

Willow did that for a short time after she first came here but she doesn't do that anymore.
