Feline Follies

Aw, such pretty cats!!

I'm new to TrekBBS, so I figured I should introduce my cat, Teega. She loves boxes. Don't all cats?

^ A right goodly cat!

Three years later, you think I'd be over it. I'm not, she was awesome and I admit I memorailize her whenever possible. New grey cat's name is Speck, combining Spot and Spock and his general appearance.

Alternatively, Little ****er. :)

Our Hootie and B'Elanna sometimes get called alt names too. . .

My Spot - may she RIP.

She loved the boxes though, long description behind this particular box, but she was named after Data's cat(s) and a proclivity for leaving 'spots' on my bed when she was a kitten.

Aw, my condolences. She was very pretty! Cool box, too.

By the way, there's also a documentary being made called "Nine Lives: Cats in Istanbul", about the -- as I recall -- nine million cats that roam there and the history as seen through their eyes and the people who care for them. Supposed to be out later this year.

I can't wait to see that! I was in Istanbul last year, and the street cats were amazing -- so calm and friendly, even in the midst of crowds. Our tour guide -- now a friend -- is one of the people who take care of them.

Ephesus has a lot of cats, too:

Anyone know what it means if a cat is intentionally spilling his/her food constantly?

I've got two, a bigger cat (like 15 lbs/5yrs) and a little cat (about 4 lbs/6 months) and although the big cat is obsessed with eating, he spills his food on purpose by pawing the floor near it pretty much every time I feed them. He is otherwise very gentle and deferential to the little cat, who is a jerk, to the point that he just lets the little one eat out of the bowl he's using and backs off.

I can't figure out the psychological trigger that makes the big guy knock over the food, he's the only cat I've had that does this and it's not consistent with his desires (to eat, and then eat more) and personality.

Junior paws the floor around his food, like he thinks it's litter and he's trying to bury the scraps. He kept flipping the mat I'd put down, so I swapped it out for a cheap tray we had lying around--wooden handles and a white plastic base. He can't flip it over so his pawing at the bits of food he's flung around just organizes all the crumbs into a tidy corner of the tray.

I think it's evolutionary behavior. Cats may have buried their food to keep it safe.

My cats will occasionally do the burying motion after they're done eating, "saving it for later".

Some cats will intentionally spill their food if the bowl is too small for their liking. ..a vet told me that when one of my cats spread his food on the floor before eating it. If they can't fit their whiskers into a bowl, they'll remove the food to make it easier to get to.

I had to give that cat his food on a plate to stop him...:D...he was the only one of my cats to do that.
