Feline Follies

Ruthless cat burglar, stealer of socks.

“Such nonsense!" declared Dr Greysteel. "Whoever heard of cats doing anything useful!"
"Except for staring at one in a supercilious manner," said Strange. "That has a sort of moral usefulness, I suppose, in making one feel uncomfortable and encouraging sober reflection upon one's imperfections.”
― Susanna Clarke, from Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell

Put on a video of "chirping birds" yesterday, just to hear some birds--as opposed to construction noise--and to see if Junior would like it. He jumped on the coffee table, then onto the TV. He looked at it awhile, then looked at the sound-bar, then looked around the TV. He stared back at me like "Did you think I would fall for this?" He then went back to the coffee table and watched from a distance---just to be polite, I think. ;)

I got much the same reaction from a bunch of mewing kittens on TV.

Some years back, I was watching TV late one night (or early in the morning, I guess). I forget what the show was, but there was a segment where a lady put a young rabbit in a box and was driving it out to the woods to let it go. The rabbit got out of the box and crawled up into the dashboard. The lady went to a repair shop and spent about $500 to have someone tear the dash apart (and put it back together) to rescue the rabbit. When he pulled it out by the scruff of the neck, it started squealing like crazy.

Well, our cat Fleetwood was sound asleep next to me. He came up out of a dead sleep and tried to dive into the TV screen to get that rabbit. He never did anything like that before, not even when there were cats or dogs or birds or any other animal on TV. But he sure wanted that rabbit.
