it must be the geometry of it all that the cats like?

Various people have performed informal experiments with this concept. It's generally assumed many cats like boxes because the confined volume plays into a cat's instinct to seek shelter, seclusion and or protection within tight quarters. So a few people got the idea to swap out ever more shallow boxes and the cats tended to gravitate towards them. Finally, those people replaced what really amounted to a "tray" with just some contrasting colored tape in the shape of a square or rectangle, and the cats entered the marked are to rest. Other people jumped straight to that final phase, starting with tape. Yup, more than a few isolated cases demonstrated the cats were drawn to the spot.

Is it conclusive? I don't know enough to say "yay" or "nay", but it seems a rather reasonable theory.

Cats are just natural social distancers.

"Stay away from me, hoomin. I'll come see you if I need you for anything." ;)

That must be the same principle as to why they like to lie *right on your homework*, rather than literally anywhere else on the desk! :)

You know the cats are just messing with us, right?
