Feel the Geek Outrage: No Trek show on a "Mensa" list

Were we on a Klingon ship, I would kill you where you stand, fanscape.com "mensa" person with no name.
It's really a null issue considering just how many other brainiacs out there do put Star Trek on their list, if they had one. http://tv.yahoo.com/collections/6076
The only consoltation is "Boston Legal" is on there, mainly for the quality of the dialogue. I've seen around 8 episodes of BL; my impression is that Star Trek had far more intelligent stories going on. I saw the first few episodes of BL and thought that Shatner was absolutely horrible, not even acting, and thought for sure he would kill the show. Shows what I know. There's something cleverly hilarious about how he's woven together the over-the-top aspects (even for Shat) of Captain Kirk with the Danny Crane character, and made it likeable, no small credit to the writing as well.

Clearly, I'm not as smart as I've always believed and all those IQ tests lied because half of that list made me cringe. And no Trek? Clearly an outrage.

And I always thought Spock was the poster boy for Mensa. Not Fraiser and Niles.

I'll forgive them as they put 'House' on there.

the Yahoo TV guy seems to think its a stupid suggestion that House is medically accurate. Dating a doctor who likes to 'play along' with the mystery while watching the episode (and out-guess the doclings!) suggest to me it is, at least 85-90% of the time.

My big problem with the list is that it seems definitely biased towards the future.

I mean, don't get me wrong, I'm well aware and quite happy that TV writing these days is more multi-faceted and gutsier than before. But the list makes it seem that anything before MASH was an insult to intelligence.

Well, I was a fan of every show on the list, especially West Wing. The exception was Mad About You. For some reason Paul Reiser and Helen Hunt seemed an unlikely and uninteresting couple, and jealousy reared its ugly head. And I hated the dog. Too, too, New York.

Jeopardy? Too tedious, and made me feel a little dumb really. I usually watch about ten minutes at a time.

Yawn.

Yet more "fan outrage" over some list that someone put together that doesn't bow down and kiss Trek's ass. This actually rates lower on my "Don't Give a Shit-o-Meter" than every time Trek has been "snubbed" by the Oscars, Emmys, and those AFI "100 Years..." lists.

Wake me when there's something to actually get mad about.

Wow, not at all what I expected.

Re: Feel the Geek Outrage: No Trek show on a "Mensa" list

Woot! M*A*S*H is on there! Sucks that Star Trek isn't there...

Re: Feel the Geek Outrage: No Trek show on a "Mensa" list

Wait... Mensa are the genius youth people, right? I'm shocked, really I am, that some of TOS isn't on their list. I'd be really curious to know if Star Trek had made this list in the past... however I've no way of researching that. :(

Re: Feel the Geek Outrage: No Trek show on a "Mensa" list

Meh. Frasier's on there so I'm happy.

What he said. :) And in the end I take my taste over anyone else's anyday, even if they're smarter than I am (and many doubtless are); because I like what I like and that's that. ;)

Re: Feel the Geek Outrage: No Trek show on a "Mensa" list

Ok... Instead of saying "What?! No Trek?!" Tell me WHY Trek should be on this list. Keep in mind that although the other shows on the list are entertainment, they are all grounded in reality. Boston Legal, CSI, Frasier even... The dialouge and stories of each of these shows is meant to be an accurate description of our human daily lives. Mad About You is a great example of this. How many of you have been in long term relationships and NOT related to something that happened in that show? Fraiser was all about an intellectual and his own failings. Even if he didn't want to admit that he had problems.

What did Trek have? Fantasy science-fiction with laser guns and techno-babble, green skinned women and a captain that made a living out of breaking the rules. How was this in any way intellectual? Which is what the whole list from Mensa was about.

Should Trek be on lists of great shows? Sure. Does it belong on this particular list from Mensa? No.

^^^
What did Trek have? TOS had eps written by some seminal sci-fi writers of the age, Norman Spinrad, Harlen Ellison, Theodore Sturgeon... Trek was smart TV. In the late 60s, sure. But really, compared to the brainless din of todays TV, I find TOS refreshingly cerebral more often than not. ;)

Genius yes. Youth specifically, not that I've ever heard.

And I can think of plenty of better shows that Mad About You. Ugh.

Hardly. It's a cartoon. A smug, self-congratulatory circle-jerk to liberal arrogance. A thinly disguised pulpit for broad propoganda. It embarasses me as a lawyer and as a fan of most of the cast.

Re: Feel the Geek Outrage: No Trek show on a "Mensa" list

So Mensa people are actually idiots.
