It seems like there are modern options to install in your house to defend it against intruders.

In ST:Picard, Will Riker had Shields, Scanners, Anti-Cloak scanners.

Who knows what other fun goodies he could've installed in his home.

What would you want to mount your home with for home security?

More Federation Utopia propaganda, hence the high level of home security. The Rikers probably still have hand phasers stashed away in the bedroom. They need a dog, too.

What do bad guys fear?
1. Home security system.
2. Home with a dog.
3. Home owner with a gun.

Just install a holo-decoy, complete with a holo-spouse and a holo-cat. And make it more lucrative to pillagers than the real deal. Although being envious of a holo-home is gonna drive you mad.

The Rikers seemed to live within a sandspeeder ride of Anchorhead if not quite next to Mos Eisley. The town and its spaceport probably would have sensors and defenses of their own. But apparently there's no great faith in the local militia among the settlers. And rightly so, if it's easy to beam down to an isolated settlement; transporter raiding is difficult to counter even with transporter-deployed police. So at least jammers and anti-transporter shields unless you want to get rid of that rare genuine McGivers on the living room wall.

“Federation home defense” sounds like an oxymoron; why even go there before Nepenthe’s situation has been firmly etched in canon? Is it a Federation planet or simply the place the Troi-Rikers needed because of Thad regardless of proximity to other interstellar governments? If it is a Federation planet, what about border outposts? Starship patrols? Planetary defense systems?

KISS: Home owner with a gun! Even Professor Crater had a hand phaser (or was it a laser ;)) on M-113. :techman:

Home defense begins at home.

If someone is breaking into your home in the middle of night, you do not call in a star ship.

You just shoot them.

Or your automated Home Defense AI ID's the perp, and the turrets pop out and starts shooting them and raises the shields on your house =D.

At the same time as it's fighting the perp, it contacts the local authorities, and once it's secured the perp in a force field trap, the authorities can arrest / beam away the intruder.

On stun. And let somebody else sort them afterwards.

Stun. It's the only way to be sure.

Seriously, though, was Riker counting on the house shields to stop a Romulan torpedo that would’ve devastated the surrounding woods anyway (but hey, it’s good old Jean-Luc, so whatever happens, happens)?

Shields would be necessary (and probably sufficient) for stopping the beaming in of a capturing party, or the beaming out of Jean-Luc and his new pet. Which is what Riker would assume is the nature of the threat they're facing; that the enemy would be happy with simply killing Picard and Soji would be a less likely scenario.

But then you have to stand there and watch them, waiting for them to wake up.

On the other hand if you disintegrate them, you can go peacefully back to sleep, calling the local sheriff the following morning.

maybe they weren't living inside the Federation? Or somewhere on the frontier?

We have no idea. Nepenthe could be anywhere.

Although I'm suspecting that it is indeed within Federation territory, based (rather sketchily, I admit) on Riker's status as "active reserve" with Starfleet. IMHO, somebody who expects to be called to active duty at any moment is not likely to live outside of the Federation.

Uh...there’s one weekly transport service and that’s about it. It seems like a frontier or non-Federation planet. My guess is that the shields surround both the house and the larger property, maybe for kilometers. If it’s just a single residential unit on a city block, then home shields don’t make sense. A single phaser blast could liquify the city block surrounding the lone unit.

The local authorities may or may not have a defense perimeter or planetary shield. Maybe the planet isn’t that significant to warrant one? Any more than a similar planet might in the Klingon or Romulan or Tholian spheres of influence.

Also, the Troi-Rikers actually live in Walla Walla, Washington. Those were their holo-decoys for anyone still holding a grudge against them from their days in active duty. Or the Joneses from across the lake...they know why.

There didn't look to be any other houses in the general area of the Rikers' home. So it probably was outside of a city.

As for why the house has such strong defenses: Probably due to Riker's high status with Starfleet. If he's on active reserve, and could get called up at any time, he and his family might be a target.
