Federation Class: MKIII

Patrickivan

Fleet Captain
Newbie
Hello fellow Trekkies!

I have come close to completing the next version of my Federation Class Starship, and it is only because I am an attention whore, that I post this before it's timely completion. Possibly by next Thursday.

Here she is. I am still open to advice.

You can see the 3 faint forward sensors, windows (that have depth to them), the port docking ring (with visual orientation colours), and the general scale of the ship.

Some bridge detail.

Lower sensor dome, and transporter emitters (or whatever we will argue them to be until the end of time)

The lower hull.

The impulse engine. I tried to get some depth in there by painting the back red, and overlaying it with a "fence" that is semi-translucent. You can also see an emergency exhaust vent in the centre, and 2 little lights (kind of like was seen on the E-D in ST:G.

The shuttle deck door. I put some landing/take off lights down- I thought that would be a nice and practical visual element. And you can see the landing sensor dome.

And a parting shot as she heads off for some more work.

Any thoughts, my fellow Trek Junkies? I am always open to praise, but gladly except constructive critisism for the sake of learning. Just leave my spelling and grammar errors out of this!

I would love to get some decent lighting on this. Some texture. And, something in the background...

Reverse the red and green on your docking port. The red should be to the shuttle's left.

Like when navigating on the water?

See- I'm actually a little confused about that when it comes to the point of the docking rings. If a shuttle is docking, it's backing up to it. And if the ship is docking, does the gantry (or whatever it's called), count?

So are the rules the same, or does it change because of how it's used?

I NEEDED to put this yet un-named ship in some sort of “natural” environment. So- using an image from NASA’s Science web page, I found a picture of Mimas in orbit around Saturn with its “blue skies!”. Background image taken by the NASA Cassini team in 2005 (science.nasa.gov/headlines/y2005/images/bluesaturn/blueskies)

I'm sorry, but is this a joke?

Is what a joke?

If you're talking about the colour of Saturn, I didn't make it up. I got it from NASA's website.

If you're asking about the ship, then I don't know what to say. Did someone come up with this before me?

I'm not sure how it would fit into a post-ENT or pre-TOS universe, but I do think Patrickivan's Federation-class starship design is a fresh and interesting concept. It seems to offer a much-needed re-interpretation of the standard "saucer and cigars" ship configuration. I'd like to see more of that kind of thinking in this forum.

What nacelle's was this ship testing? Just by looking at them they would be to small to mount on anything larger then this ship and its not very big in it self as the docking size is pretty big in your shots. I like your idea for the fixtures for holding nacelles. you might to consider another one with a bigger fixture to hold larger nacelles.

Sorry, but this ship looks like you are trying to parody the really beautifully designed Olympic-Class.

Fair enough. I have no problem with people not liking this ship- kind of like how I find the Olympic Class to be a bit of a messy looking design, or how I find the Defiant Class to be a bore.

But to suggest this was all a parody, a mocking interpretation of another design, well you're completely wrong. It is indeed inspired by the Daedalus Class, but it's not a parody of the ship. No more then the Olympic Class is of the Daedalus.

Now a very good example of what a parody is, can be found on the thread where we all take the E-D and redesign it as JJ might have done.

But no, this isn't a parody. It is inspired by the Daedalus Class, and by the original classic design rules that Starfleet ships have a two hulls, and two warp nacelles, and a shuttle deck in the back.

If there are some specific things you don't like about it, I really wouldn't mind the input. Someone could have an idea that I may really like to integrate into this ship. In the mean time, I will continue working on a design that I am really quite proud of.

There's nothing collosally different about what they're testing. Just little performance and updated componants. The nacelles are actually quite large, and I think it's the perspective of the image that makes them look small. They're radius is 3.5 or 3.75 metres (so 7-7.5 metres at their greatest width or 23-24.6 feet), and they are about 50 meters long... The docking ring door is actually quite large at 3 meters high on the just the actual door part (round is not a good use of space).

The big clamp looking devices house the nacelle test sensors, and serve the purpose of facilitating quick swap out of various compatible nacelles. Though I can see your point that they may be too small.

I'm not sure how it would fit into a post-ENT or pre-TOS universe, but I do think Patrickivan's Federation-class starship design is a fresh and interesting concept. Thanks. Though it is supposed to be just around the end of TOS. None-the-less, I see your point. The Federation is a big place, and I figure there must be all kinds of odd looking designs, and concept ships. Fortunately so, because we'd all be out of a job if there wasn't :)

WTF? Don't have even a single argument for that? It's really a beautiful ship.

Thanks! Is there anything specific you like about it, and anything you find to be ungainly?

When/where can I download the model?

I don't know. Is there a specific way, or format for google sketchup? Otherwise, you can just copy the image from my wordpress (for personal use only ;))

I like the way you made the 'saucer'

You can, once in SU, hit the button in the upper toolbar that says "Share models". And also it will purge the model.

You know, you should add some hull plating texture of some kind because it's a lil' boring that gray only color.

Texturing in SU is limited at best. You'll find that most SU users don't bother. At least for something as organic as starships. Texturing works great on nice flat walled buildings.
