Federation Captain?

I think someone pointed this out above, but technically, it should be "Starfleet Captain". A Federation Captain could easily be the master of a civilian vessel with a Federation registry, like the Aurora or the Vico.

And we know that's not what he is because...?

^ We don't. I was working under the assumption that the 'Federation Captain' that they specifically mentioned on the casting sheet would be of a Starfleet ship other than the Enterprise. But yes, he could be captain of a freighter or a cruise liner or a fuel tanker. The Maru, maybe ;)

Not that it makes any difference to the film, but I liketo nerd-out once in a while :)

This is going back to the root of the OP (by MattJC)...I think there is nothing wrong with someone saying that the Captain of a Federation Starfleet Ship is a 'Federation Captain', Just like the Capatin of a British Navy ship is a 'British Captain'.

I get what you're saying though -- it probably would be more clear to say 'Starfleet Captain', or even more specifically 'Federation Starfleet Captain' (as opposed to some other civilization's generic 'star fleet'). But I still see nothing inaccurate with saying 'Federation Captain', just like there's nothing wrong with saying 'British Captain' when in the context of speaking about Navies.

...Unless these folks really mean "Federation civilian captain". And if they do, we can then debate why they would choose to use the startrekspeak word "Federation" if they just wanted to list a guy who portrays a human captain. Usually, hollywoodspeak in end credits is simpler and less story-specific than that.

Do they use "Federation" as the opposite of "Klingon", intending to make clear that there are both white hat (Federation) captains and black hat (Klingon) captains in the plot? Or do they say "Federation" because this captain is not human?

That's the sort of slow descent to madness you get when trying to analyze something that so obviously lacks the factual substance for being the target of an analysis.
