Federation Captain?

MattJC

Fleet Captain
I promise I'll be polite with post, but what is the "Federation Captain" that is listed in the Trek XI cast?
Orci has said that they have used elements from the novels for this film, so was this Federation Captain in one of the novels?
Shouldn't it be Federation President or Fleet Captain?
Anyone have any ideas?

Sounds like a generic designatio for some irrelevant background character to me.

You know, like the nameless Federation Captain that sat at the briefing room table in ST6:TUC and had just one silly line.

(Technically, it should be "Federation Starfleet Captain" or something. But nobody gets that technical in roll call lists.)

It's Shatner's cameo!

What do you care Matt JC?? I thought you had no interest whatsoever in seeing this film.

Let's just say for the sake of argument that the writers are being square with us and this is NOT a remake, alright?
It couldn't hurt to find out a bit about this movie. I'm not wasting gas on a trip to the theatre or money on this movie at the moment.

12 months before release you are concerning yourself with minutae related to a secondary or tertiary character

You are that steeped in details on this film and think it is worth discussing....but you have already decided you wont go see it

...um ok

btw...the 'federation captain' is a new role...just the captain of another ship. It has been cast with some unknown European actor.

I can't even get a straight answer, even when I try to be civil. Thanks alot.

You asked if anyone "had any ideas."

A number of posters offered theirs, which are all sound enough given what we do or don't know so far.

You have no complaint.

Of course he does.

You know we're all conspiring to like this movie even though it's guaranteed to suck!!!

You asked if anyone had any ideas, I gave mine as did others. That's as straight an answer as you're gonna get given the question you posed.

Perhaps it's a role for Pike's predecessor, Captain Robert April (TAS: "The Counter-clock Incident") who, in the novels (ie. "Final Frontier", "Best Destiny", etc), was George Kirk Sr's captain when little Jimmy's Dad went missing in action!

I'm sure there will be more than one Federation ship in this film, hence the need for a "Federation Captain", probably one that we never heard of before.

I suppose they could have been more clear and said "Federation Starfleet Captain"...It's sort of like saying "United States Captain" rather than United States Navy Captain". That would be a bit unclear taken out of context.

However given the context of this film, it would not be necessary to be so specific. Such is the case as when someone is speaking in the context of Navy ships, you could simply say "U.S. Captain" and still be completely clear in your meaning.

To answer your original question more specifically, I think the role is for "A Federation Captain" not "'THE Federation Captain"

I want it to be Frakes as Riker, who transports the elder Spock to some important destination with the Titan. Frakes should go back in time to retrieve Spock, too. That way Frakes will have been in every version of Trek.

If the Titan had been in "TATV" on ENTERPRISE maybe the finale might have been moderately less illogical and out-of-whack in regards to its setting and time.

It might also be that the character description is in fact formally accurate, and that there is a civilian Federation skipper serving some function or another in the plot of the movie. Say, the skipper who delivers Kirk's family to Tarsus IV to be slaughtered. Or the commander of the distressed freighter in the simulation that Kirk cheats his way through.

TATV would have sucked anyway but it would sucked less if they had Riker and Troi on the Titan instead of years ago on the E-D during "Pegasus".

"Let's just say for the sake of argument that the writers are being square with us and this is NOT a remake"

It is a remake. Since WNMHGB, there have been TOS Remakes tm. This film isn't any different.

I think you are trying are not to like this movie. The syndrome is called denial. :D

Having Robert April in the movie would be sweet.
