Spoilers Fear the Walking Dead - Season 6

This week, the focus turns to Dorie, with a brief cameo by June and some appearances by Strand and Morgan. It has been more than half a year since we've seen him last, and I didn't even recognize him at first with his beard. We got some more background on Dorie's early life and family, and some insight into his devotion to justice. Unfortunately, he's up against a master manipulator in Virginia and we see her sink to new depths to get what she wants. In order to cover up for a murderer-- probably herself-- she both frames an innocent women and morally blackmails her into confession, for Dorie's sake. Dorie is willing to risk everything to save her, but of course Virginia knows this so she speeds up the timetable. And what better way to rub in Dorie's helplessness than to carry out the very scenario that she claimed to never want to see-- making an example of the woman by feeding her to the dead. Now there's no doubt that Virginia is just another Negan.

And then the final insult: Dorie is rewarded by a public ceremony, a promotion, and a reunion with June. But we will, I'm sure, see that Virginia has underestimated him.

In other news, Morgan and his new pet are assailed and attacked by the Graffiti Twins, who are after that key. Morgan easily dispatches them, of course, but the mystery of the key deepens, since it seems to have no connection to Virginia. But watching Morgan's nice new car made me wonder if these Dead shows make a point to only use makes and models that pre-date 2010. I don't know enough about cars to be able to tell.

Why everybody is down to horses on TWD, but on Fear we still see people driving cars? Originally I assumed Virgian's people would be the only with cars since they had access to the oil field, but now we've also seen Morgan and the key guys driving.
Is it a timeline thing, with Fear at an earlier point when more cars were still working, or a location issue with Fear is Texas and TWD in Virginia?
Sherry's group apparently gets around on horseback, so it looks like not everyone has access to cars.

I think they are only 4 or 5 years into the apocalypse on Fear... and they are looking for oil (being Texas, which should have refineries)... TWD is up north, 10 years in... so unless they have some tankers running routes to oil fields and refineries...

...which would justify the determination displayed by Morgan in trying to bring her down, since he is well aware of that type of enemy.

Perhaps, but I sense that Dorie is still going through some self-reflection issues that even June won't be able to address. He was pretty much ready to do anything for the sake of justice (trying to mirror his father), so he might have the idea of sacrifice on his mind going forward.

If they have no connection to Virginia (or anyone in her group who might act independently), the key cold lead to a three-way fight between Team Morgan, Virginia's group and I will go ahead and say the helicopter group, which means (or should) Althea will need to make a decision about her loyalties.

But watching Morgan's nice new car made me wonder if these Dead shows make a point to only use makes and models that pre-date 2010. I don't know enough about cars to be able to tell.

Good question. I did not catch the make of the vehicles. Some fan somewhere must be paying attention to that.

If the time differences are that wide, no one should ever expect a FTWD / TWD crossover. I' not sure that would not work, since no TWD character was said to have traveled anywhere in the time jump that started after the Saviors war concluded.

Wow, I didn't realize there was that big of a gap between them. I thought it was just a year or two at the most.
Was that because of the 6 year time jump TWD did after Rick died?

IIRC, the shows do use current model cars, meaning cars from after 2010 despite the fact that such cars shouldn't exist in that world. It's something nitpicking sites go nuts about. I recall reading somewhere that the car company which sponsors the show wants to use the show to show off their newest cars, so that's why they end up with models from five years or more after the apocalypse. Also the reason why the cars we see on the show are always in such pristine condition despite being after the complete collapse of society.

I never really payed that much attention to the cars, and I don't really have a problem with that even if I did. That's the kind of thing you just have to put up with when it comes to TV shows and sponsorship. At least they're not as obnoxious about it as other shows. I can't help but role my eyes when ever a scene in another show comes to a screeching halt so the characters can talk about all of the cool features of the car they're driving. Or when a shot of a character's car driving away starts with a huge close up of the company logo.

It amused me in the car chase through Rome in Spectre that that whenever they drive by key landmarks, they stop shooting at each other just so there can be a nice shot of the cars driving by that particular landmark. Especially when they just stop momentarily to pose for a photo outside the Vatican.

Yeah, he's on a guilt trip now, too, on top of everything else. That's why Virginia has made a mistake in thinking that she bought him off.

I had a feeling it would be something like that.

It makes me wonder if the showrunners will go against expectations and have Dorie be the one to defeat and/or kill Virginia, since just about everyone believes or has the desire to see Morgan be the one to do the honors.

1.28 million for this last episode, making it the second lowest watched of the series, despite being one of the best reviewed on IMDB. Being on Halloween weekend didn't help the show as much as election anxiety probably hurt it.

Works for me. Either would be poetic justice.

Fear the Walking Dead
Season 6 / Episode 5 - "Honey"

Dwight / Sherry: The Outcasts--or Virginia's Outcasts were kind of...ridiculous betting it all on the SWAT van; all it would take is the driver to call or escape, and they would have been up the creek without a paddle. Dwight trying his best Indiana Jones-horse-dismount-to-the-van impression may have been brave on his part, but foolish; if he lost his grip, he would have been a dead man. That van was not worth the risk after finding Sherry. Speaking of Sherry,--she is not the best tactician, That one SWAT van is not an army, and Virginia is not just going to sit still and wait to be shot. Moreover, the van's weapons will run out of bullets, and when that happens--then what?

Initially, Sherry seemed a bit hypocritical questioning Dwight's interrogation methods and what he might have done for Negan...until she locked him up to prevent him from being that person again. So, it turned out that she's suffering from Negan-induced PTSD, feeling guilt for not killing him when she was his "wife". There's no doubt she's heading toward disaster with her inability to realize killing Virginia is not going to give her a sense of solace or resolution for all that she failed to do with Negan. It is possible she might be a bit suicidal and will exercise that option if her hunger for revenge leads to the death of the innocent--including Dwight.

Dwight's marital bliss may be short-lived after all.

Morgan:
He is the voice of wisdom, but the dumbass Outcasts cannot be bothered with reason. Dwight stopped him cold by guessing he would risk just as much if Grace asked him, which makes one wonder if Grace will place him in such a position when (or if) he's close to facing off with Virginia.

Notice how he micromanages his friends by not sharing information (his reunion & plotting with Daniel)--as if he's not fully trusting them. Granted, in the months since their separation, he might naturally suspect that they--having no hope of escape--might shift loyalties to Virginia for survival's sake, but his distrust could lead to trouble if he's second-guessing them during the coming fight.

NOTES:
The terribly underused Luciana makes her season 6 debut next week, while Dorie and June get more screen time.

GRADE: B.

I would grade it differently than you @TREK_GOD_1 . I would be more generous because i feel like there was some real drama here. Some tough emotion in trying to deal with a problem. I'd give it an A...so far, to me, the best individual episode in this "anthology style" season

The "stunt casting" of MOrgan and then Dwight has paid off for me in this. Now, being a TWD fan from episode one, it was great to see them use their respective histories as part of this story , even if just a mention (MOrgan's "Every Life is Precious", though thought his season with Carol kinda helped shift him from that a bit; also SHerry and Dwight's history with Negan).

Now, you would have to have watched the other show to understand the impact, but i think most people who are STILL watching at this point are in fact those hardcore fans, so it shouldn't be a big deal (in terms of needing to watch older/other episodes)

I feel sad for Dwight as his purpose for coming out was taken away form him again...but at least it is set up so there is a possibility of reunion, and not an immediate killing of Sherry, which would have been tragic in a bad way. But i think the episode did a great job of helping us understand their relationship, "then" and now. Still some mystery, but i am intrigued, and feel confident it will be revealed.

I also was kinda shocked at Dwight's initial turn, but they did a good job explaining it for me, and helping us see how complicated things are now.

Now, how did Morgan hook up with the office people again? Good to see them... hope they will be helpful in future episodes.

I would also give points for giving their stunt people a chance to do some active stuff where they don't have to hide their faces while filming (i.e. weird angles or dark lighting) -- theie masks do it for them!

Average episode. Enjoyable enough, but somewhat lacking compared to the other episodes this season. Everything seemed somewhat by the numbers. Dwight and Sherry reunite, but the happy reunion is somewhat short lived as it turns out Sherry is now part of a group dedicated to taking Virginia down. Dwight drinks the Kool-Aid and wants in, but when Morgan arrives on the scene he urges to wait and strike when the time is right, but Sherry and Dwight want to strike Now. Some doubt is sown, Sherry turns on Dwight, ostensibly for his own good. The ambush goes down, Virginia doesn't show up, but the others want to go ahead anyway, but Sherry now has doubts of her own preventing her from going through with it. Things sour between her and Dwight.

I got to say it's rather silly the Outcasts go around in individualized masks, IE the women wear masks with eyeliner and lipstick on them, and Dwight's frenemy has his mas cut to show off his beard. Since they wear these masks to conceal their identity, they should all be identical, to cover their identities completely. I don't know, maybe it was something to give the audience help and differentiating who was who while they were wearing the masks, but in-universe it looked very silly.

Well, geeze. The road of true love never runs smooth. It's all bumpy and dusty and has big armored SWAT vans and warhorses and stuff on it. I was kind of hoping that Sherry and Dwight would have some kind of happy ending. And I suppose they still might, since neither one of them is dead yet. And it was kind of sweet that each of them was trying to protect the other from doing bad things. And hopefully Virginia will buy into the old dress up a walking corpse in your own clothes to fake your own death trick. And Dwight freed the dog, so he's got some good karma coming to him.

And Morgan is showing some of the badass tendencies hinted at a couple of episodes ago. I don't think the Morgan we know and love would hogtie somebody and drag them behind a horse like that. On the other hand, he's trying to recruit people for his new Utopia on the dry lakebed, which is nice. But he should probably think about some kind of vetting process before he extends his invitations. I'm a little unsure about Sherry's gang of tough and vengeful killers with their white masks adorned with lipstick and eyeliner.

They do have their tank back, though, which is a plus.

I definitely do NOT have it...especially now, these shows aren't worth it (even Talking dead) to spend more to get it. World Beyond on TrekBBS is so bad that no one even talked about this qeeks episode...and a joke felt like a spoiler to someone, until they realized it was a joke

I'm not interested in enough of the AMC shows to spend money on AMC+, I'm already stretching things pretty tight with the streaming services I currently have.
It's nice that they finally got the MRAP away from Virginia's people, although our main characters still don't have it.
That was definitely not how I expected Dwight and Sherry's reunion to play out. Hopefully she'll deal with her issues so she they can get back together.
It always cracks me up when they find a way to cover people's faces when it's time to ride horses or motorcycles. And apparently Al changed horse somewhere along the line, because the one she left on was dark brown with white on it's forehead and the one she was walking when they got back to the hideout was light brown without any white.
I was surprised the office people showed up at end, at least now Morgan's going to have a few more people around than just him, Rachel, and baby Morgan.
