Favourite video game music?

My favourite of the McGlynn vocal tracks would probably be You're Not Here. Hearing that blasted during the ending credits of the Silent Hill movie was an amazing experience.

Warcraft II had some nice tracks, including Pursuit Theme from The Frozen Throne and the early part of the Arthas segment from Reign of Chaos's Cinematic Suite.

There are quite a few videogames that I've played over the years whose soundtrack was so brilliant and, unfortunately, never released to CD, although I found that I could rip the audio tracks off of old TG-16 CD games. Unfortunately, I've long since lost the games and I've never been able to do the same with PS2 or Gamecube games (as far as I know). My nominations are:

1.) Thunderforce III (Sega Genesis)
2.) Y's Book I, II, & III (TG-16 CD-ROM)
3.) Castlevania 2 (NES)
4.) Blaster Master (NES)-the music on the ice stage rocks!
5.) Phantasy Star I & II (Sega Master/Genesis)
6.) SPYRO!!!! (PS)-I especially loved the "ethereal" music in "Ripto's Rage") (You CAN download one original track from the first game ("Rain") off of Stewart Copeland's "Anthology" album")
7.) Super Mario Sunshine (GC)
8.) SUPER MARIO GALAXY!!!! (Wii)
9.) Starfox Adventure (GC)
10.) Monster Lair (TG-16)
11.) Legend of Zelda:Windwaker (GC)-There IS a 2-CD release (that I own but is currently lost) of all of the original music from the game.
12.) Valis II (TG-16 CD-ROM)
13.) Dungeon Explorer (TG-16)

I just have a soft spot for the originals: Pac-Man interlude music, Frogger, the various Donkey Kongs and Mario Bros.

Love them 1970's electronic bleeps, blips and tones.

The OOOOOooooooOOooOoooOOooooOOOoo from Halo and the Mjolnir remix from Halo 2.
Tetris. Once the music is in your head it never leaves.
Mario Bros. The very first game.
Ikari Warriors. Obscure scroll game from the '80s.

Another vote here for the soundtracks of Final Fantasy 7, Chrono Trigger, and the Metal Gear Solid games. Also, it's sad that there's only been one person to mention Still Alive! I think that's a pre-requisate these days when talking about game music.

Sadly, though, the very first thing that popped into my head was Duke Nukem 3D!
Now that brings back memories!

I don't much care for the music in modern games (though I don't mind it either, it's just there in the background for me), and I never owned a game console, so my favorite game music is from Amiga computer games.

Turrican 2+3 - don't have much to say about them, except that they rock.
Dune - way ahead of its time and just damn catchy
Agony - one of the most beautiful tunes
Cannon Fodder - "War's never been so much fun"... weird and catchy, what's not to love?
Xenon 2, The Lost Vikings, Soccer Kid, Magic Pockets - funky tunes that still hold up pretty well, even today

and basically everything Martin Iveson did back then, especially his music for Banshee, Universe and Skeleton Krew

It's nice to see Simon's Quest mentioned. I always kind of liked that game's music.

I tend to enjoy the older stuff more. Video game composers had a very limited musical palette to work with back in the 8-bit days, and they made the most of it. That's why I love all the remixes and orchestral versions of old video game themes that have come out recently - it's a testament to their musical talent.

Four of my all-time favorites, remixed by yours truly:

DuckTales - The Moon
It's kind of otherworldly (well it should be considering it's the moon) and really fun.

Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!!
It's simple, catchy and upbeat. All there is to it.

Metroid - Kraid's Lair
It really sells the spookiness of the game. Well, that and the complete lack of background. Don't know why but it's scary.

Final Fantasy VI - Kids Run Through the City Corner
I've never even played the game but the music almost makes me want to cry, it's that good. I have the whole Piano Collections soundtrack and it's amazing.

I could go on and on, but then it would turn into a college paper or something, and I'm not in college so that would be pointless.

The original Deus Ex.

That's the first one that comes to mind.

Mass Effect is one of my recent favorites for music, just for the 80s sci fi sound a lot of it has. There's a couple tracks that remind me of Blade Runner.

Halo and the Half-Life series also have quite a few memorable tracks, as does Bioshock. There's a few decent RPG tracks I can think of that I like, but to be honest a lot of them tend to blur together. Especially anything done by Jeremy Soule. For all the hours I have logged in WoW, I actually haven't listened to the music very much.

For older games, Doom, Super Mario Brothers, Metroid and Legend of Zelda.

Mass Effect was indeed pretty damn good musically. I especially love that Faunts track at the end. Perfect closing theme.

Mass Effect was pretty neat; I like the soundtrack for that although I know it would drive my dad nuts. The soundtrack for Advent Rising is amazing. I love the song "Bounty Hunter".

Planescape: Torment - very atmospheric and captured the mood instantly.

A close second is the music from the X series of space combat games - from Beyond the Frontier (although the fight music was a bit duff) up to Reunion (which was excellent overall).

Essentially, any video game music I end up seeking out and keeping long after I've uninstalled the game is a keeper. :bolian:

Mega Man 1-6 on the NES

Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
Super Smash Bros. Brawl
