Favourite video game music?

Any game, any platform. Has to be specific to the game though (not just a piece of music composed for something else).

This thread was brought to you by the Burnout 2: Point of Impact soundtrack, and the Big Surf Shores track music in particular. :D

I finally located a source for the music. Can't wait to burn it to a CD and try it out in my car, just to see if I get Drift & Oncoming points.... :)

My absolute favourites are probably the Silent Hill soundtracks, composed by Akira Yamaoka. A great mix of creepy ambient electronica (in the vein of Aphex Twin's Selected Ambient Works albums) and smokey, grungy alt-rock, often with vocals. Silent Hill 2 and 3 have my favourite OSTs in the series, although there are standout tracks on all five albums. It might be worth noting that Yamaoka's primary influences include Portishead and PJ Harvey.

If you like those, Amon Tobin's soundtrack for Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory should also be on your list.

I'm quite fond of Nobuo Uematsu's work in the Final Fantasy franchise. Same thing with Yamoka using Mary Elizabeth McGlynn's haunting but also beautiful voice in the vocal tracks.

StarCraft has good music, as does Tachyon: The Fringe (the game my av is from).

Super Mario World on the SNES.

If there's any doubt, check out these (free) re-recorded rock covers of the music.

Only a fundamentally good song can be updated this way and come out so great. They were good in the game, and they're even better in this version.

i'm completely enthralled with zelda music and final fantasy music. i found myself humming the opera from ff6 the other day.

Vampire the Masquerade Bloodlines has some good music, aside from the licensed stuff. The main menu and Grout's mansion are probably my favourites, but the game's full of effective music.

I have fondly nostalgic memories of Doom's music, which I still think is strikingly atmospheric and wholly appropriate to the game.

Beyond that, I don't know. Probably the KOTOR games; which had a lot of Star Wars-ish leitmotifs and dramatic beats that were at a cinematic level. And World of Warcraft, which had quite a number of memorable themes (Ironforge in particular).

Castlevania: Symphony of the Night had some outstanding music (particularly the music in the Royal Chapel called "Requiem for the Gods").

Wonderful mixture of classical and gothic rock.

The Fatal Frame games have the best spooky-ambient music I've ever heard--especially the first game. That's the only survival-horror game that ever gave me nightmares.

Super Smash Brothers Brawl has some really great pieces of music remixed for the game, though a lot of the music is just taken strait from a game without any changes.

Other games I'm going to have to go with are Chrono Cross, Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, and pretty much any title in the Mario and Zelda series.

The Dig by Michael Land.

The soundtrack to the Blade Runner videogame (mostly quoting Vangelis, but it's still great).

The four Medal of Honor scores by Michael Giacchino (Medal of Honor, Underground, Frontline, Allied Assault).
