Favourite Trek Couple

Spock/Uhura (Star Trek 2009): unfortunately I did not like the movie into darkness and everything that came with it.
Did somebody by the name of KaraBear just vomit at mention of this couple? vomiting at the mention of two minority characters in a romantic relationship is just a big NO NO. prejudice much? or pephaps its because she ruined your K/S slash.
Spock counts as a minority in the real world?

Spock is half vulcan and half human. yes he is a minority. He is a mixed breed of different races. he is not a human white male like Jim Kirk.

I strongly believe that Spock is more likely to experience racial abuse for been a mixed breed more so than Uhura or Gerodi or Sisko who are black.

So yes both Spock and Uhura are minorities in terms of ethnicity. Vomiting is a sign of disgust for something. Regardless of anyone intentions, KaraBear saying she wants to vomit at the site of this couple is blurring on racial lines because a lot of interracial couples used to get that kind of response from people not too long ago and even till now.

A lot of people in year 2013 still look at interracial couples with disgust and with a why face. If you don't believe me visit the deep southern states of USA. You can simply say you just don't like the pairing or you prefer another pairing.

No need for strong hate charge words especially when the people you are directing it too are minority characters.

Spock is even more of a minority than Uhura because human and Vulcan hardly get together. In the 23rd century I am sure no one gives a shit or even looks twice at a human interracial couple when they work down the street. People in the 23rd century still frown upon vulcan/human dating each other.

Remember when the vulcan kids called Amanda a whore because she was human and when the vulcan elders said Spock was at a disadvantage because he had a human mother? I doubt Uhura or Geordi have ever experienced that kind of insults for being black in the 23rd century.

So yes Spock is a minority in terms of ethnicity.
Key words: real and world.

I do think there's something to the idea of Spock as a minority. He would have faced the prejudice that a minority would face in our world, while Uhura wouldn't have faced racism on 23rd century Earth. For what it's worth, both actors are minorities as Quinto is gay. I think it's possible that Quinto uses that in his acting, as Spock as a sometimes abused outsider has been really well done.
I think people can not like Spock and Uhura as a couple without it being racist. They may want Uhura with Kirk instead for example. I am slowly liking Spock and Uhura more, a strong story for them in the third movie with better writing could make me a bigger fan of them. They were better in the first movie.
I kind of agree about Troi and Tom Riker. I ship Troi and Riker hard, but I did get frustrated at how he kept her on the backburner until he was ready for her (and it worked!). When Tom Riker came along I was really rooting for him to get Troi since Will had been playing her for so long. Of course, that didn't work out, and in the end I was very very happy for Riker and Troi to get married.
I also really like Picard and Beverly, they should've gotten together sooner, and I hate that the movies didn't get them together but at least the books did.
Speaking of books, I love Calhoun and Shelby from New Frontier. Their romance is beliveable and well written, touching and sometimes strange.
I did like Spock and Zarabeth - love Yesterday's Son - but Spock's best match was the Romulan Commander.
Kirk and Edith were pretty cool together, but you know he'd have left her if he could get the Enterprise instead. No woman can keep Kirk.
I always wanted Jadzia and Bashir, and Worf and Ezri, so of course the show paired them up the other way. I thought Worf really brought Jadzia down, she always was having to jump thru hoops for him and his Kingon bs, while Ezri didn't put up with Worf's crap. I feel like Jadzia had a bit of a romanticized view of Worf while Ezri could see the real Worf more clearly, so their relationship, even if not romantic, was more honest.
I always rooted for Janeway and Chakotay, if only her command situation didn't make it impossible. *sigh*
Tom and B'lanna were a good couple, they had a lot of angst to work thru, and the writers actually took time to develop them as a couple over the years.
Sarek and Amanda did have a great relationship, I just wish she'd have set him straight over how he treated Spock so badly.
So, in short, my favorite tv couple is Riker and Troi, my favorite couple from the lit is Calhoun and Shelby.

Stop accusing people of being racists. Stop saying that because KaraBear doesn't like your favorite fictional couple she is prejudiced. Stop even suggesting this.

This. I don't like them together, and it has nothing to do with their races. I just don't think Spock fits well with her, personality-wise. I know this is because of comparing too much with TOS, but I just can't handle the idea of Spock even getting into a relationship, especially at that point.

But I'd say that Spock would experience racism far more than human minorities (being that we don't see racism against black people, for example, in Star Trek. The only time it's ever mentioned,I think, are times like when Sisko doesn't want to go into the holosuite because the program is set in a time when there WAS prejudice against black people. That would suggest there isn't anymore).

But there still is racism/specieism(?) against other races. O'brien doesn't like Cardassians, in TOS no one likes Klingons, etc. Even Sarek is shown to have what could be seen as "racist" moments against his own son.

exactly, you don't have to be racist not to like them. many people who dont like them are not racist. they just simply say. no i dont like them together. however when you are using words like digust to describe this couple. you may not be racist but you are blurring on racial lines because of the history the the words like that had with a lot of interracial couples. borgboy you as a gay man should know this above all.

I also agree with you again borgboy. the problem with spock/uhura in the 2013 film was the writing. the whole writing in STID makes me so furious because it was quite bad. which is why I started the thread on the movie forums that the writers should not return.

Spock/uhura are not my favoritie couple.

I only said the romance was very well done in the first film. I am more of a critic than a fan. a critic will tell you the good and bad unlike fans who are so blinded by their love for pairing and people that they refuse to find no wrong with them.

I believe many professional film critics gave the spock/uhura relationship positive feedback on representing the romantic aspect of star trek 2009. I am and was on those critics. critics and fans seem mixed on the relationship in the 2013 film.

Secondly why is it only karabear I criticised? a lot of people here said that they did not like the couple. do you see me criticise them? NO I DID NOT.

I only criticized Karabear for using the term/smiles wanting to vomit to describe a couple that happens to be interracial. It is a poor choice of words and expression. that was my criticism.

I never said she was racist.how can I when I don't even know her. what I said was she could be blurring on racial lines with her expression.

Looks like you went a lot further than that. "prejudice much?" seems pretty direct to me.

Please stick to the topic and avoid interpreting other people's motives.

thank you. Please look at this imdb boards and comments to understand my concerns for people using strong words to define an interracial pairing.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2647544/board/flat/222356536?p=2

I hope you understand when I say words like this are highly insulting to interracial parings regardless of if you mean it or not. the person's motive is always technically interpreted with words like that. Some insults are just off limits to a specific group of people. The IMDB board showed how a imdb user was highly offended when another user called an interracial couple disgusting.this is the point I was trying to make.

a lot of interracial couple are highly offended when people call their relationship disgusting. Karabear did not say the term disgusting to define the spock/uhura dymanic, she put a smiley face of her vomiting. which is in synonym to disgust.

I wonder why karabear did not define other couple she did not like with a smiley vomit or feel the need to mention or reply to those who mentioned a couple that they liked but she did not like. No. she specifically went after the interracial pair and implied it made her want vomit.

thank you.

This.

And Cara007's claim that use of the :barf: smilie denotes racism makes the charge even more ridiculous.

I never said the barf smile was racist. I said a smiley or the barf smile as you call it that made a person want to vomit when it concerned an interracial pairing is not appropriate because of the history of interracial parings in USA.

What is ridiculous is you been very ignorant of certain words that are not just appropriate to certain groups of people because of their history.

God, are there so many ignorant people on earth.

I GUESS SO.

NEXT.

^ And I think your assertion that interracial pairings should be treated any differently from any other kind is more "blurring on racial lines" than anything KaraBear said.

This is all KaraBear said on the topic:

I can't believe anyone said Spok/Uhura :barf:

There aren't even any "certain words" that you claim KaraBear has said.

I'm pretty sure a sizable chunk of the J/7 fandom would use that smilie or its equivalent at the thought of J/C and believe me not a single bit of that would be about Janeway and Chakotay being different races.

Your reading of racism into a poster's dislike of a pairing is awful.

Enough!

I already told you to drop it. You have completely misrepresented the poster in question, and now you're calling other posters "ignorant". Your comments are off-topic.

You have now received an infraction for trolling.

Comments to PM.

Cara007, I do not appreciate being called "ignorant" (among other things) via private message any more than I do here in the forum. Please do not contact me via private message again.

I am a total shipper sucker.
A lot of my picks did not actually ever get together... :(

- Janeway / Chakotay
- Picard / Beverly Crusher
- Paris / Rain Robinson (from Future's End)
- Paris / Torres
- T'Pol / Trip
- Seven / The Doctor
- The Doctor / Denara Pel
- Jadzia / Bashir
- Jadzia / Worf
- Kira / Odo
- Garak / Ziyal

I'll add these two only because Troi / Worf was just WEIRD and had to go!
- Troi / Riker

I want to put Spock with someone because he is one of my favorite characters, but can't really think of anyone I would put him with seriously. Same with Data... :( I want to put him with someone... if I think of anyone I'll edit this.
