While this is quite true and I do love Merlin, I have to go with Gandalf (and not just because Ian McKellan is a god amongst men).Merlin.
He is the archetype, the one upon whom all of the others were modeled, Without him, the others are far less likely to exist. But I guess since he lived backwards in time, waiting him out will reduce his competition, eventually.
