It's hardly "everyone". I think it's just Burnham and her connection is limited to family. Personal connection has been a part of story building, probably since storytelling began. Look at Star Trek, how many plots seem to hinge on a character being the old boy/girlfriend, mentor, drinking buddy, rival, what have you of a main character? Making it personal ups the drama. Would WNMHGB work as well if Gary was a random crewmember? Would Journey To Babel work as well if Sarek was just another Vulcan?
I don't think DISCO is over doing the "nostalgia characters". How many have there been? Sarek, Spock, Amanda, Mudd, Pike and Number One. Any more? Other than Mudd they are connected to Michael via Spock. So really it's two: Mudd and Spock related people. Over at Picard you have Data, Riker, Troi, Hugh, Icheb and Seven. Riker and Troi are the only ones that are iffy, IMO. But they were in a great episode, so they get a pass. ;)

Its fine to have Gary be Kirks friend or introduce Spocks father as long as its not over done like Trek often do especially season 7 of TNG. For me having Mudd was fine as it was just a fun throwaway episode and also when exploring someone like Pike (or April if they wanted) who we see little of in TOS but the Sarek family thing took from the story for me and made it less enjoyable and I would have no problem watching a show about a random human named Burnham with no special historic backstory
As I said its not just Discovery but nostalgia has been a big thing in TV and film for a bit now and its not for me. I feel like if TNG was made for the first time today Picard would have to be Kirks son and Data built by Scotty or something.

Burnham is only special if one knows about Sarek and Spock prior.
And only IRL. Until the Battle of the Binary Stars she was just the XO on one of several science vessels in Starfleet. I'm not even sure being the daughter of an Ambassador made her any more special than Tilly or Detmer. At best she was a rising star in the fleet.

Ya I meant IRL that the family are special in the sense that they are famous to the fans

It might not be a problem for some but for me it is as I find it shrinks the universe and as much im against pissing on new star wars for the sake of it I was really disappointed with similar storylines there too
No more than Spock's father being the Vulcan Ambassador the Enterprise needs to take to Babel. Or the endless stream of exes, Kirk manages to run across in every corner of the quadrant. In TWOK Kirk manages a hat trick: an ex-girlfriend, an old enemy and an unknown child!

Yes some old shows have similar problems definitely with Carl Marcus but why is it always on the DIS forum that problems with the show are always countered with other shows problems. I never said TOS was perfect and as I said earlier TNG S7 went was overboard with the family stuff but none of that means DIS doesnt also have small universe problems and I dont mention the other shows issues here because this is the Discovery forum

Everything is relative. "Small universe" is approaching "Mary Sue" levels of misuse.

Simple. Those problems in past shows did not impact enjoyment. But, in new shows and/or films they are presented as fatal or near fatal and always a blow to enjoyment.

DSC is small universe like the Enterprise is the only ship available is small universe.

It always blows my enjoyment which is why I skipped all those family episodes in TNG and the mirror stuff in DS9 and all the different Spiner characters in post TNG shows

"Religious Captain Pike" was the story idea I found the most interesting, along with whatever (implied) ominous thing the Red Angel was originally doing.

The beginning of the Red Angel storyline was really interesting and actually had loads of potential, some good episodes at the start of the season... and then it devolved into the usual juvenile CBSTrek writing "Michael was the angel all along because the universe revolves around her", the AI taking over the galaxy trope, "Oh btw we can build another angel suit in an afternoon". I'm still not even sure I understood the whole last signal thing, it felt as confusingly nonsensical as the Avengers Endgame time travel plot hole that people seem to give a pass because Marvel can apparently do no wrong.

Definitely Red Angel.
One of my favourite things about S2 was the mystery behind it and coming on here every week to read and share theories. And it paid off imo. The 2nd season finale was the best season ended since Best of Both Worlds.

The early red angel episodes was a great example of how you can do a season arc and explore strange new worlds at the same time

The Mirror Universe arc from S1 edges everything else out.

The Red Angel arc had the potential to be my favorite in franchise history, but they let me down when the potential for a mysterious, unexplained, potentially "supernatural" figure basically just became Burnham in an implausible time suit. I still enjoyed it, but the disappointment keeps it from being at the top of my list.

I never have and never forgave the plot holes, nearly every mcu movie has them.
