Favorite Starship from the Franchise?

Thought I had answered this, but must have been thinking of a similarly titled thread several months ago.

TOS Enterprise, TOS Klingon ship, and Sternbach's Voyager.

I didn't know what to make of the Enterprise when I first saw it in 1966, and was wary of it. It didn't look like anything I'd seen before except for the saucer section. It grew on me. Fortunately, antibiotics cleared that up.

Actually, over the years I've come to appreciate the original a lot more. Too many of the later ships have all this excessive detailing which is cluttered looking. Too many windows. Overdone hull plating. Notches cut out. Stepped surfaces (looking at you, underside of Enterprise-E saucer). The thing that works so well about the original is that evokes a navy ship without having any features of one other than a fantail and markings. If you've ever stood next to an aircraft carrier you know that the hull is mostly san details and the hull sections are HUGE, not all these tiny plates. Like a sub, the thing operates in a hostile environment and is designed to be serviced from the inside, so of course it's mostly smooth... it's designed to be.

Why wasn't their a TNG or post movie update of the Miranda? I think if it had Voyager's nacelles and the defiant's plating, it would look pretty cool.

That sounds a lot like the Saber class.

Close but not quite as good as the Miranda.

The Soyuz-class was post-movie update of the Miranda, yes? Just not commissioned in the TNG era.

As an aside, I think of the Nebula-class as very Miranda-esque, in that we almost have Constitution:Miranda::Galaxy:Nebula. Obviously, where the analogy falls down is that the Nebula has a secondary hull.

Closer but I like the Miranda the most for it's upgradeability and ability to interchange the pod for whatever reason.

I think of the Centaur class as a sort of Miranda replacement. Or was intended as such.

The Centaur looks kinda off to me.

To me it looks like a run-of-the-mill kitbash/mashup.

Yeah, but to me the Miranda looks better.

Voyager is too long and pointy. Defiant is too...round. NCC-1701 and the refit are fine, but lack a certain elegance. Enterprise-JJ looks like a cartoon.

Defiant-class, then Enterprise-class (sorry, but the Constitution-class designation is reserved for the PT USS Enterprise).

The Enterprise-D is my favourite. It's elegant and stately, inside and out. It's so photogenic, in fact, that it could withstand the transition from television to film without any modifications. However, the one I'm most impressed with is the refit enterprise from THE MOTION PICTURE. It's truly a work of art - literally! Very inspired design and detailing. When ILM altered its paint finish, it lost some of its luster though, unfortunately. But the Art Deco-derived redesign is just perfect ...

The J is easily in my top 20. I like the slender pylons and small nacelles relative to the saucer, compared to previous designs. With the evidently tremendous saucer that suggests something like ungodly power.

I can see loving the Enterprise refit but not the interior design. I like the 60's interior and the TNG interior.

You know the TNG interior is mainly the TMP interior, right?

My attitude about the Enterprise-J will always be the same:

If you remember, the Ent-J is only shown as part of a timeline that will no longer exist, i.e. one where the Delphic Expanse covers 1/4 of the galaxy and the Sphere Builders are a major player. My view is, the Ent-J is a result of a timeline where the war with the Sphere Builders has consumed so much resources that starship technology is at a standstill - i.e. it never advanced much further than the NX-01. (I mean, come on. The Ent-J really does kind of look like an uprated NX-01, doesn't it?)

Whatever Enterprise exists in the "real" 26th century - where the Expanse and the Sphere Builders have been wiped out, and starship design will be able to proceed without interference - will surely be much more advanced than the Ent-J ever could be.
