I remember when ‘Broken Bow’, the pilot episode, first aired I was really excited about the whole prequel concept of the show. Having spent almost 15 years in the 24th century, I was looking forward to learning more about humanity’s first steps into the great unknown.
Unfortunately the initial excitement soon made room for disappointment as the show seemed to re-hash stories from TNG or VOY. It wasn’t until the 3rd season that the show really found its footing. The 4th season really dived into Trek-lore -and is my favorite.
We’re currently re-watching Enterprise for the first time in 15 years and my opinion on the show has changed drastically. We’re almost at the end of S2 and I realize now that the show had some great storylines and character moments. The whole dynamic with T’Pol and the Vulcans, the difficult relationship with the Andorians, the mysterious temporal cold war, etc..
At the time, I wanted Star Trek to be more like BSG or 24. But now in the age of serialized storytelling, I kind of miss those series that are able to find the right balance between standalone episodes and overarching storylines. I think DS9 found the perfect balance, but looking back now (and able to binge watch the show), Enterprise also had an interesting continuity throughout its run.
