TMP was partly about establishing something different on the big screen, if Kirk's commanding Enterprise at the beginning it would be more like an upgraded episode of the series. Getting the band back together and Kirk getting his mojo back were interesting parts of the story.

True, but it didn't make sense for Kirk to be promoted to a "desk job", when he never really wanted it in the first place. Compare that with Kirk's circumstances in TWOK, where he is reluctant to go back into the field, which works better as a narrative.

Kirk should know exactly what kind of duty to expect as an admiral, but he obviously didn't refuse the promotion. What doesn't make sense is the idea that seems prevalent in Star Trek, that commanding a ship is the highest job that really matters, and being promoted above that makes someone kind of a loser.

Kirk's a bit of a house cat when it comes to the captain's chair.

When he's in (post the five year mission, TUC, BEY), he wants out. And when he's out (TMP, TWOK, GEN), he wants in.

Kirk likely took promotion because he's a career officer and it was the next step in his career path. I recalled this image from a comic called Star Trek: Mission's End.

Spock left Star Fleet to focus on the Kolinahr discipline on Vulcan and McCoy retired and took up 1970's Disco fashion. Maybe the captain's job wasn't worth doing without his friends.

God, I wish that was how McCoy actually phrased it when he broke the news to Kirk. "Sorry, Jim, I'm resigning my commission. I'm retiring to take up 1970's Disco fashion. It's a dream I've put off for too long."
