I always felt that the franchise did a disservice in getting rid of the rank of "Commodore", simply because the producers wanted to follow the US Navy's discarding of the rank, IRL. In my, Kirk would have been a Commodore circa TMP, where he would still be in active command of the USS Enterprise (just like Commodore Decker), then be promoted to the rank of Admiral circa TWOK. Decker would still legitimately be "First Officer" at the rank of "Captain", and everything would go on from there.

On a side note, IMO, the Enterprise in TMP would be the "NCC-1701-A", Enterprise-class, with the original Enterprise, NCC-1701, Constitution-class, being put in a fleet museum, only to be stolen later in TSFS, thereby get destroyed at the Genesis planet, thereby making its destruction all the more poignant. Later, after Kirk is demoted, he is assigned to the newly repaired NCC-1701-A as "punishment" in TVH, and then go on from there. IMO.

Lieutenant (or maybe Lieutenant Commander) on TNG.
I'm really good in what I'm doing, so it must be at least Lieutenant.
BUT: I'm absolutely not interested in any kind of command. Just let me do my job, but leave the big decissions and responsibilities to others. Like Spock never wanted to be captain, because he was the best science officer. Not everybody goes to starfleet, to command a ship ;)

Hmmm.… let's see if we can arrive there by a slow, scientific, systematic, ponderous process of elimination.

Obviously, you shouldn't be too low, because that could get you killed on any arbitrary away mission. So that eliminates anything below lieutenant.

You shouldn't be too high either (above captain rank) because one of the prerequisites for those ranks are you turn evil or mad. Don't feel like doing that, so they're out as well.

So that leaves the ranks between Lieutenant and Captain. Turning to Way of the Warrior we see that Worf (lt. Commander at that point) complains that life has got a whole lot more complicated since he got into command, after which Sisko tells him 'wait till you get that fourth pip, you'll wish you had gone into botany...'

So that leaves lieutenant as the rank with apparently the least complications:p

Or in case you are promoted to a full Commander the only thing you can do is to do something heroically stupid to get demoted to a lower rank again.

Nothing below ensign? Everybody knows the best rank is chief petty officer.

(I just noticed for the first time that the film was reversed in that shot.)

TMP was partly about establishing something different on the big screen, if Kirk's commanding Enterprise at the beginning it would be more like an upgraded episode of the series. Getting the band back together and Kirk getting his mojo back were interesting parts of the story.

Yay, LCDR is winning! I always loved Scotty and McCoy's one broken braid above the solid one. Then in TNG, DS9 and VOY I thought the coolest pip arrangement was the two full, one hollow. Scotty and Data were my very favorite characters on their respective shows, too (Kira on DS9 as well, although she was the equivalent rank in the Bajoran Militia, at least until the very end of the series). And the rank seemed high enough to be important in Starfleet but not be too stressful. ;)

Love to hear the posts from those who served. Thank you.

I've enjoyed every rank throughout my career, and I am looking forward to the experiences I will gain as I progress.
