Favorite Phasers!

Ironically, the little cricket phasers in TNG were essentially dropped after the first season because, thanks to their small size, it often looked like the phaser beams were coming directly from the characters' hands.
Which is retarded, because even your dumbest first-time casual viewers can figure out in a couple of minutes that he must be HOLDING something that's shooting out a phaser beam.

Which is even more weird because the TOS hand phaser (P-1) was not much larger than the TNG cricket.

Only if it is mechanically possible for the barrel to fire when it's not locked forward. That wouldn't call for an active safety arrangement - it would be perfect passive safety, the gun being unable to fire at all unless the barrel clicks into place. It's a bit like saying that a chainsaw is a major risk to people outside the line of the blade whenever the operator removes the chain for maintenance and lets it dangle to the side, or that a howlizer is a big risk to bystanders if somebody puts the round inside sideways.
