Favorite musicians/bands?

I heard a rumour that Prince William and Kate Middleton want ABBA to play at their wedding. I don't know it's true though but, either way, I don't think they'll get back together.

Queen
Rush
Journey
GnR
Metallica
Simon & Garfunkel
Gordon Lightfoot
Steve Miller Band
CCR

I'm sure more will come to mind...

My favourite band is Queen. Apart from that, the bands and artists I spend most time listening to are, roughly in order according to the last year or two:

Stone Temple Pilots
Ry Cooder
Pearl Jam
Greg Dulli (whatever project he is doing)
Mark Lanegan (whatever project he is doing)
Iron Maiden
Stevie Wonder
Helen Forrest
Janelle Monae
Al Bowlly
Faith No More & anything Mike Patton is doing
Anthrax
Therapy?
Jamiroquai
Seth Lakeman
Alice In Chains

And my top picks for last years album releases are:

The Gracious Few - Self Titled
Janelle Monae - The Archandroid
Stone Temple Pilots - Self Titled
Seth Lakeman - Hearts and Minds
Brad - Best Friends
Iron Maiden - The Final Frontier
Jamiroquai - Rock Dust Light Star

Given that William's family includes the likes of Charles, Anne and Andrew, wanting ABBA to play at his wedding is quite ominously apposite. :guffaw:

my favourites are:-

Alice Cooper - especially liked his newest album along came a spider
Meatloaf
iron maiden are not bad
Blondie - their older stuff up to 'hunter' then it went wrong somehow
Queen
some of vanessa mae's stuff is ok
oh and have just started getting into Alicia keys (in a manner of speaking)

There are a lot of bands and artists that I do like (Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, David Bowie, Foo Fighters, Tenacious D), but my favorite band is Pearl Jam.

I could listen to their discography all day on repeat. I have like 7 different versions of "Even Flow" and I could play them all in a row and not get sick of that song.

I have two favorite bands, Pearl Jam being one of them. And I know exactly what you mean. I have a lot more than 7 versions of Even Flow, because I collect the bootlegs...and Pearl Jam is such an AWESOME live band that the boots of live performances, IMO, are better than the studio albums. And so you can listen to the same song several times and each version will be different enough to keep your interest. And then you can get on YouTube and watch things like centrics..where people have posted videos of the same performance...4 of 5 different ways, with the camera focusing on Eddie in one, Stone in another, Jeff in another, Mike in another, Matt (or Dave or whoever) in the last. These are fun to watch, because you REALLY get to see what everyone is doing through the whole song - not just Ed.

When PJ releases a studio album, for me, it's sorta like them releasing a movie trailer. Their studio albums are mere 'coming attractions' - the REAL music is gonna happen live. I don't know how many times I've gotten a new studio album and thought "Well, there are some good songs here...but this album maybe isn't as good as the last one"...only to completely change my mind once they go on the road with the new material and I fall in love when several MORE of the songs.

Anyway, as for my list, I have two favorite bands that are in a special category:

Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band
Pearl Jam

I am CRAZY for these two bands, and buy everything that is released, sight unseen (or 'unheard' - whatever). My XM radio is now pretty much permanently jumping between E Street Radio and Pearl Jam Radio, and I could not be happier, because from where I sit, as long as I stay on those two channels, there ARE NO bad songs. :D

I should also say that I tend to like all the bands that came out of Seattle in the early 90's: Soundgarden (although Chris Cornell seems to have taken some sort of wrong-ass turn into quasi-pop lately as a solo artist - I'm hoping a Soundgarden reunion will put him back on the right path :D ), Alice in Chains, Nirvana (although I'm not really a fan of Foo Fighters, I gotta say...), Screaming Trees, Stone Temple Pilots, etc. Plus all the backstory bands that Pearl Jam members were in - Mother Love Bone, Temple of the Dog, etc.

Other bands that I really like a lot:
The Tragically Hip (my third favorite band after Springsteen and Pearl Jam)
Bon Jovi
The GooGoo Dolls

Prince (Revolution or no)
Alanis Morrisette
Santana and _______ (fill in the blank).
Matchbox 20
(when they actually get anything done)
The Sam Roberts Band

Old/REALLY old stuff:
The Police (less so Sting by himself as I think Stewart Copeland is a positively brilliant drummer)
Dire Straits
Queen
Guns n Roses
Van Halen
(I used to love these guys...but I think all the hard living has pretty much done them in, sadly. Still love their older stuff though! And I will continue to maintain that Alex Van Halen is perhaps the most underrated drummer in the history of rock)
Crowded House
Soul Asylum
REM

Journey
Fleetwood Mac
The Eagles
(less so the solo careers of Glen Frey and Don Henley, although both put out a few good songs)
Eric Clapton
Janis Joplin
Jimi Hendrix

I'm sure I'm forgetting some...but that is a pretty reasonable list....

GAH!

Once again, solid proof that the moment Diana died, this kid was doomed to a life of Royal Looserdom.

Could the Windsors BE any more melted-vanilla-ice-cream than what they have become? I mean, seriously. :(

I really want to like bands such as Deer Hunter, Arcade Fire, and various other "indie" bands but it's a bit tough. All these bands are the ones that make the top lists at the end of the year, yet for some reason I guess it's an acquired taste.

So the bands I like lean towards the Country Side with some various pop/rock singers and bands in there:

Zac Brown Band
The Band Perry
SheDAISY
The Dixie Chicks
Jamey Johnson
Johnny Cash
Robyn
Metallica
Green Day
Miranda Lambert
Steve Miller Band
Linkin Park (the first two albums mostly)
Heuy Lewis and the News
Hootie and the Blowfish
Cage the Elephant
The Beatles
Alanis Morrissette

My tastes are really all over the place, so why don't like like some of the bands I mentioned at the top of this post I wonder.

You and I seem to more or less have similar taste. I can't quite seem to get into top 40 either. Have you ever looked into the celtic side of things? I like a lot of Celtic Rock, which tends to get into country a bit depending on the song. I'd look into Carbon Leaf and Spirit of the West.

The only artists on that list that haven't had a 40 hit are Jamey Johnson and Cage the Elephant. Most of them have had more than one. :p

PKTrekGirl, if you like Stewart Copeland, you should try and find the two albums by Animal Logic, which has the rhythm section of Copland and legendary 70s bassist Stanley Clarke. They were fronted by a female singer, Deborah Holland, and had a bunch of session musos for the other roles> They were on my faves list. Good band

Yes, Australis, as I was reading through the thread before I posted, I noticed your post and was pleased that someone else appreciated him as much as I did/do. I actually made a note of looking Animal Logic up on YouTube to see if there was anything there.

In a past life, I was a drummer myself, so I know enough about it to appreciate a good (and in Copeland's case, an innovative) drummer when I see one! I was pretty disappointed when Sting went solo and The Police broke up. And in truth, although I like some of Sting's solo efforts, I do think he'd have done better if he'd had others to ground him just a bit.

But that's just me.

Still, I understand that Stewart Copeland has kept very busy over the years doing other things, and I'm not at all surprised. He's a really talented guy.

I'll try and check out some Animal Logic videos or something, if there is anything on YouTube! And thanks so much for the tip! I really appreciate it!

Godsmack
Nirvana
Metallica
Eluveitie
Alice in Chains
Barenaked Ladies
Nightwish
Epica
Korpiklaani
Lacuna Coil
Critical Bill

Have you ever listened to Karnivool? We saw them open for PT last year, and they were surprisingly good.

One of the many fine Australian bands. The singer also plays in another band, called Birds of Tokyo, which are a bit more rock oriented. I prefer Karnivool to Birds of Toyko.

For me, favourite bands are Radiohead, Muse and two Australian bands, Something For Kate and Eskimo Joe. There are many more bands I love. Too many to name.

But over the last few months, lots of Arcade Fire and The National. The National's High Violet is probably favourite CD of last year. But The Suburbs is just as good, and little more uplifting than High Violet.

Not a big fan of Eskimo Joe, but 'Foreign Land' is an awesome song.

Cohen, Dylan, Cash, Beatles. Second tier would include U2, Radiohread and others. Used to be very into Queen and REM at different stages, but not so much these days.

If you like Stewart Copeland, it might be worthwhile checking out Oysterhead, if you haven't already. The overall sound in this clip is a little murky, but you can hear Stewart's playing clearly enough.

Oak Ridge Boys

Hey thanks, guys! I really appreciate the videos - gave me a nice Stewart Copeland fix! :D

Australis - last night I went on YouTube and watched a different Animal Logic song. That one I didn't really like (except for the rhythm section - Stanley Clarke and Stewart Copeland 'make' this band for me) called "Rose Colored Glasses". I don't know...maybe the singer (while she has a good voice) is too much on the conservative side of mainstream for me or something. She looks like she could be a secretary in an office - not a rock singer.

The video you posted above is much better. For one thing, I like the song better (a bit less pop-ish, although still squarely in the pop arena, I think), and for another, while she still looks like a secretary, the video is not as much focused on her as the live cut I saw last night. Plus, I think this song is more suited to show off Stanley and Stewart's talents.

M'S - I had never heard of Oysterhead before today. This music is a bit more my style (more on the rock side than the pop side), but I know nothing about this band at all, either.

Can you guys recommend other songs by these bands? You don't need to post videos as I don't want to dominate this thread with this 'tangent'...but I would be curious to try more - especially anything that leans more toward rock than pop, if possible.

You know, at the time they were popular, The Police were like no one else - they had a new and unique sound that no one else had. And while it is true that Sting wrote the lion's share of the songs, Sting was not the ONLY reason that band was what it was. Copeland did some things on the drum kit that really blew a lot of people away at the time...and he was very highly regarded. After they broke up, Sting went and did his own thing...but in truth, I always thought it was 'more of the same', only without NEARLY as good of a band backing him and giving the music that little tweak The Police were famous for. I guess Sting still did okay on his own - at least for a while...but I don't think his solo career ever rivaled the popularity of The Police. And I always thought of his stuff, especially as he entered the 90's, as lacking in any sort of ability to move on and try to innovate. Which was the very reason we all fell in love with The Police to begin with.

Just me, maybe...but I think they'd have all made a lot better music if they'd stayed together. :p Maybe Sting ended up with a bigger stack of cash as a result of a solo career...but at a certain point, enough money is enough money...and one would THINK one would care about one's legacy.

But what do I know?

Oysterhead was originally supposed to be just a one-off, formed by Les Claypool (Primus) with Trey Anastasio (Phish) and Copeland for a single New Orleans Jazz Fest appearance in 2000. Apparently, they enjoyed working with each other enough that they got together again the following year, recorded an album and did a tour, after which they again went their separate ways. The vid I posted above was from five years later, when they got together one more time for a Bonnaroo Festival appearance. As you were saying earlier of Pearl Jam, I have an idea that these guys were a band you'd want to watch live to get what they were fully about.

It's been a while since I listened to the album last, but in addition to "Little Faces," I recall "Oz Everlasting," "Mr. Oysterhead," "Army's on Ecstasy," "Wield the Spade" and "Pseudo Suicide" as being among the interesting tracks. You can listen to brief samples on the Amazon page I've linked here and download MP3s, and I imagine any tracks which you might find interesting can also be obtained via iTunes or one of the internet radio stations such as Pandora or LastFM.

I really liked his playing with The Police, too - on Ghost in the Machine in particular, but he was excellent throughout.
