Tough pairing down to five. As a kid, my favorites were the monster or giant alien threat episodes: Galileo Seven, Arena, Devil in the Dark, The Doomsday Machine, etc.; still love all those but I'll throw out my "adult" list:

1. Metamorphosis
2. Balance of Terror
3. City on the Edge of Forever
4. Mirror, Mirror
5. Amok Time

Seasons ranked? 2-1-3. Toss up between 1 and 2 but I'll give it to 2 for tone and consistency. Hard to argue between the quality of writing between season 1 and 2 though.

Favorites from each season? Balance of Terror, Metamorphosis, Spectre of the Gun

Five is too hard, but I can give you ten. Not necessarily in this order -- they fluctuate depending on what day it is/my mood. The more I watch Taste of Armageddon though, the more it sticks in my mind as my favorite.

EDIT: I don't prefer a season order really. I think they're all solid, even season 3, which is underrated imo.

The more I watch Taste of Armageddon though, the more it sticks in my mind as my favorite.

Armageddon has grown in my estimation thru the years. I wouldn't put it in my top 5, or maybe not even top 10, but it has a lot of good qualities. And I think there's some real interesting stuff "hidden" in the screenplay.

For me, season one is the perfect example of a consistently brilliant, adult, SF drama. There were budget compromises, but otherwise they did it just the way they wanted, and threw thoroughly adult, challenging SF at a mass audience relentlessly, producing a series of epic SF films more than they were producing mere episodic television.

Space 1999 was a bit like that too.

Season two required more and more compromises to stay on the air, get ratings, and stay on schedule. Not their fault. My position, though, is that much of what people complain about in s3 was already going on in s2. 2 and 3 were much closer in quality than people tend to think. Triskelions? SEASON TWO...

Back in 1980 I could never understand why the BBC would show The Empath, Whom Gods Destroy and Plato's Stepchildren or repeat Miri! Well I liked Miri when I finally got to see it in 1982 but the other three I can agree with the BBC just this once!

I love all 79 episodes like my own kids. "Spock's Brain" is just the one with Down's Syndrome.

I never thought of it that way.
