Favorite Bands

Gotta say I approve of your avatar. Janelle Monae is definitely a new favorite of mine. Gotta tip in the tightrope :techman:

Thanks, went to see her at the Bristol Academy a couple of months ago. Brilliant gig, very theatrical, and she can pull off every bit of her stuff live.

Matthew Good Band/Matthew Good, no contest. Rage Against The Machine and Audioslave are a close second though.

Pizzicato Five
Goldfrapp
Portishead
Thievery Corporation
Natacha Atlas

But my iTunes library is full of random stuff: Abba, Amy Winehouse, Yma Sumac, Zeppelin, Gang of Four...

It's probably easier if I divide it into bands and artists/dance, as I like a lot, and a lot of it isn't classic rock bands. You know what, it would be easier to list artists that I know but don't like, but I'm not going to do that, so here's my favourites:

Bands:
The Killers
Gorillaz
Biffy Clyro
The Wombats
Arctic Monkeys
The Hoosiers
My Chemical Romance
Noah And The Whale
The Noisettes
Orson
Pretty Reckless
The Script
The Vaccines
Coldplay
Blur
Queen
Eiffel 65
Hurts
Journey
Oasis
Muse
OneRepublic
Two Door Cinema Club
Vampire Weekend
Boys Like Girls
You Me At Six

Solo artists/pop groups/dance music/rappers:
Alesha Dixon
Alexis Jordan
Alicia Keys
Avril Lavigne
Basshunter
B.O.B
Beyonce
Cascada
Chase & Status
Chipmunk
David Guetta
Devlin
Eminem
Enrique Iglesias
Example
Far East Movement
Gabriella Cilmi
Inna
Iyaz
James Blake
Jason Derulo
Kanye West
Katy B
Kylie Minogue
Little Boots
Mika
Mike Posner
Nicole Scherzinger
N'Dubz
Owl City
P!nk
Professor Green
Pussycat Dolls
Rihanna :adore:
Same Difference
The Saturdays
Scissor Sisters
Shakira
Skepta
Sugababes
Taio Cruz
Take That
Timbaland
Tinchy Stryder
Tinie Tempah
Yasmin

I make no apologies for being a pop lover. And hip-hop as well. With hardly any old-school bands either. Then again, there are several artists I like that I didn't mention on here. This is also a very long list.

The Spice Girls
S Club 7
(too) I like a lot of different bands from different genres.

Beatles, Queen, U2, REM, Cash, Dylan, Cohen. Of the acts still going, the last is the only one whose next album I eagerly look forward to.

My three favorite bands are:
*Pearl Jam
*Alice In Chains (although I'm just getting into their new stuff - I took Layne Staley's death very hard)
*Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band

I LOVE those three bands, and for my money, they are the only three bands who have put out PERFECT albums - Ten, Vs., 'Avocado' (Pearl Jam), Jar of Flies, MTV Unplugged (Alice in Chains), Born to Run, Born in the U.S.A., and Magic (Springsteen) is pretty much my entire list of perfect albums.

Other bands I like quite a bit, however, include:
*The whole sub-genre of Seattle grunge - Soundgarden, Nirvana, Screaming Trees, Hole, Mudhoney, The Gits, TAD...and including pre-grunge bands like Skin Yard - I love them all/collect them all. For easy, I'll include Stone Temple Pilots in this group, although that is technically grunge foul.
*The Tragically Hip - why Canada sent us Nickelback and Justin Bieber and kept these guys all to themselves is a mystery to me. IMO, a Canadian National Treasure. LOVE this band.
*Jane's Addiction
*Jeff Buckley (RIP)
*Bon Jovi
*Prince
*The Police
(although not Sting by himself)
*Queen
*Dire Straits

As for new bands, I like a few...but 'favorite' to me implies a certain amount of longevity - at least a decade of awesomeness. So I would not call any new bands 'favorites'. However, I will say this: the list of bands whose CDs I have purchased over the past couple of years, but who are NOT on the list above is very short. So, under the put-your-money-where-your-mouth-is principle:
The Shins
Breaking Benjamin
Filter
Alter Bridge
Cage The Elephant
The Birthday Massacre
(as of last night)

The Beatles
The Who
The Kinks
The Rolling Stones
The Zombies
Led Zeppelin
Black Sabbath
Rush
Camel
Iron Maiden
Pink Floyd
Tool
Radiohead
Dream Theater
Porcupine Tree
Opeth
Spocks Beard
King Crimson

*The Tragically Hip - why Canada sent us Nickelback and Justin Bieber and kept these guys all to themselves is a mystery to me. IMO, a Canadian National Treasure. LOVE this band.

Dunno, but good question. I think there are a lot of really great Canadian bands waiting to be discovered by Americans, Blue Rodeo being another almost unheard band. It might be down to the terrible taste people have as to why Nickelback is so popular. I can't stand most of the stuff on the radio these days and Nickelback is played so often. Nickelback isn't the only one obviously, but some of these choices that become popular for whatever reason are really odd, when we have so much better to offer. It's why I thought the Olympic closing ceremonies were so terrible. It's as if they didn't even try to be diversified in the music choices. They were so predictable, and the musical choices/bands are always similar choices whenever we do an international event. It's times like these that would be perfect in showcasing talent that's so much a part of our culture but haven't necessarily already been heard. I sometimes weep for my country and wish we could do better in that department, in going beyond Alanis Morisette, Nickelback and Celine Dion to represent Canada's musical talent.

I agree (except for the part about Alanis Morisette - I kinda like her! But I could do without Nickelback, Celine Dion, and Bieber 'fer sure). Another Canadian band I really like is The Sam Roberts Band...although I wouldn't call them a 'favorite' quite yet. Maybe I should have put them on the list of CDs I have purchased in the last 2 years though...because their last CD came out within the past couple of years and I bought that...as will I buy the one that is coming out soon (if it hasn't already - I can't remember the date).

I will go and look up Blue Radio on YouTube and check them out. Thanks for the heads up there! :)

Oh, don't get me wrong. I wasn't dissing Alanis. I like her too. I'm just saying that she's one of the select few that get used to represent Canada's music talent when there's so much more that could be done. It's as if, according to the media, we have only those to show when it comes to showcasing our music, and it's annoying. It makes us seem rather limited in our output.

Oh, and it's Blue Rodeo. They're an alt-country band, and one of the best. They're often compared to Wilco. They're one of Canada's bands that most Americans have no idea exist despite being around for years, maybe even as long as The Tragically Hip, and is considered another one of our best kept secrets. Although I'd hate to pigeonhole them as alt-country, because they just have great songs in general that aren't even country.

Ah! Gottcha! Yeah. I like Alanis - she had some guts back there in the 90's - I think that's what got her noticed by us. I'm glad she did though - I like her.

And yeah...I do not understand why we end up not even hearing about some of your best bands. Shoot, I wouldn't even have known about The Hip were it not for Canadave, who introduced me to them on this very board about 4-5 years ago. :techman:

I was hoping that satellite radio would change this 'border of the airwaves' we have going here.... and maybe it will eventually. But you would think that our music industry would see Canada as a testing grounds...and pull the bands that are popular there for introduction here. But it doesn't seem to work that way. :(

Humm...well, I'm not a very big fan of Country, but I'll give them a try, anyway.
