Favorite Bands

I'm sure this thread has been done many times before, but I'm not finding one-- so time to start anew! What are some of your favorite bands/artists? What's great about them?

some of my favorites:
of Montreal- ranging from whimsical, bubbly ditties to the craziest psych pop out there, they're ever-changing and endlessly compelling

Lady Gaga- the first popular act that I actually liked and respected. Want your bad romance.

The Decemberists- folksy, high-brow, intelligent... gotta have something to cleanse the ears after a night of top 40 binging, eh?

The Beach Boys- I'm not sure Pet Sounds has ever been topped.

Too many to write 'em all down. I agree with the Beach Boys for that era definitely.

The last few years I've been into symphonic metal. I own the CD collections of several groups in that genre though not all of these fit into the genre.

After Forever
Amberian Dawn
Elvenking
Engel
Epica
Kamelot
Lacuna Coil
Leaves' Eyes
Nightwish
Sirenia
Sonata Arctica

For many years it was classic rock like Boston, Chicago, Kansas (lots of place names), Deep Purple, Led Zepplin, Lucifer's Friend, Rainbow, Rush, Styx, Uriah Heep, The Who.
Also, Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Kiss, Savatage.
I have a fair sized collection of Celtic music as well.

My favourite band is Queen. To me they are the quintessential rock band, with a range striding across Metal, Glam, Rock, Pop, Jazz, Blues, Funk, Classical & Opera and more besides.

I think they are the most diverse mainstream band that has been.

My second favourite band is Stone Temple Pilots, for similar reasons.

I think I'd have to pick The Beatles, Led Zepplin and Emerson, Lake and Palmer.

For solo artists-Elton John, Jack Johnson, David Bowie and Cat Stevens.

I like a diversity in music, a striving to rise above common pop and, despite pop hits, I think these have all tried to do that.

The Fall
Joy Division
The Smiths
Roxy Music (early)
The Sisters of Mercy
Dexys Midnight Runners
The Jam
Adam and the Ants
Talking Heads

are a few of my favourites.
