Fast Courier design

sojourner

Admiral
In Memoriam
Hiya, Been working on this design for a few days and thought I would post a couple pics before I head out of town for the week. I have to give The Axeman credit for the initial hull design. He was going to make a through deck carrier out of it. Not sure what the status is on that, so I borrowed the broad lines after making sure he was ok with it.

In my version, this is a small fast courier/scout ship/captain's yacht? The scale is only one main deck making it quite small. I may make the nacelle struts variable position so the nacelles can be moved up/down for different needs. Anyway, this is what I have so far. Still very rough.

I know the hull design is rough but I'm feeling it.
It's not bad but with a small ship you can do quite a bit.

But the Nacelles...I love'em.
Flat designs allow for modular mounting on other ships
But more importantly I LOVE the INTERCOOLERS on this design. It's a new approach and they're well positioned away from the tapering at the which means we know where the coils are. The Bussard scoups are familar...yet new....yet simple.

On the right hull those nacelles could go far...(no pun intended)

My opinion:
Scrap the One deck Hull Design
Consider a Escourt or Science Vessel.
Personally I would go cruiser.

I'm thinking it would look better if you turned it upside down. Have the smaller portion of the hull be the bridge. Just a thought.

The overall shape and proportions look good, although I'd maybe go for a slightly more tapered front end myself as it looks a little blunt and truncated from the underside. The odd bit for me is the detailing on the nacelles, it looks more like hand-grips with those raised areas. The short round ones on the underside look like thumb switches.

Everything looks like Something. It's not important. What is important is what the features do and how your design reflects that function.

I percieved this was a good Nacelles design because it's Mid Stage Intercoolers have more area and allowed the Coils to have more space on the inside of the Nacelles. That means a more efficient operating speed.

It's a courier ships...That might be important.
Don't let the look dictate the need.

Very nice, sojourner. I like where everything is going and I love the idea of only one main deck. But I could see this design more as a long-range scout ship than a courier or captain's yacht.

I'm not trying to be funny or anything, but you might want to call this design "Sojourner-class" if it's meant for independent deep-space operations...

Back in town. Looking at some of the suggestions now. Thinking I agree on narrowing the hull some, it looks a little wide.

Re:the nacelles - I was trying to give them "bulging muscles" to give the impression that the ship is fast. Looking at them now, I can see some obvious nuBSG influence. I like the look, but not the modeling I used to achieve it, so will probably redo them "better".

As for the class name, Hehe, thanks for the suggestion.;)

Time for an update. Spent today working on the nacelles mostly. The detail on these are turning into a real pain to model with all of the subtle curves, but I think the results are worth it.(the nacelle alone is a 25meg file) I took a couple of minutes and narrowed the main hull and sunk the deflector dish location into it. The last image is the model as it looks now in sketchup. I added a runabout and shuttle for size reference and to inspire me on details. Hopefully my fellow Sketchup users will appreciate it.

I don't often get excited by other peoples design....but...hmmmf...that rear view is sexy!!

I'm not feeling the front.
*note* You don't really need a defector on ships (if that's what it is.) on a ship this small.

While I really like the overall look and feel, those nacelle grilles are still irking me somewhat. I'm not sure what it is exactly, cant put my finger on it. Maybe because they make it feel a bit retro, like having iron grilles over stuff. Maybe if it were detail just visible underneath the smoother blue cover it would have the future/retro feel of the new JJ-Prise bussards?

Neat design you got there. But I think I like it more turned upside down ... :shifty:
