Fashion Verdict - The Twelfth Doctor, Post S8

I wish I could find the link, but I recently read that Capaldi likes to keep his Doctor's look simple so that children can easily recreate the look for Halloween and such.

I think it's more important for the Doctor to have a basic style and silhouette rather than a consistent outfit. The Fourth and Tenth Doctor's got it just about right - the same basic outfit with a lot of variations.

Ten? He always wore the same suit, with two colors, and the one big coat. Unless you mean swapping out the shirt & tie for the open shirt and t-shirt underneath?

Four had several coats of varying lengths, plus any number of pants and shirts and such underneath; plus at least four or five different scarves IIRC. Capaldi's look has the one, nondescript coat with red lining as the sole real constant; its lack of standout-ness is part of what lends itself to the lack of a truly distinctive look to this Doctor in S8, in my view.

This year the coat remains constant but we've got the holey shirt, jumper, and t-shirt combos underneath, plus at least three different kinds of pants (the Troughton-esque versions of which I don't think work well, but at least they stand out more). Later this year we'll have the red velour and (it seems) some sort of grey suit which may be a one-off, like the suit he wore on the Orient Express last year. Overall, I'm liking the variation, and I suppose it's good to NOT have a very distinct look for a change.

With his "attack eyebrows" alone, this Doctor doesn't really need a very visible costume to stand out in a crowd, IMO.

Agreed. I also think it reminds me a bit of Hartnell & Troughton in that their costumes never seemed to be drawing attention to themselves. They just wore something that felt vaguely compatible with the character's stature.

Smith's hair is also noticeably longer in "End of Time" than it is in "The Eleventh Hour". Also in Victory of the Daleks and the season 5 Angels episodes it also looks a bit longer because I think those were the first filmed.

Yeah. IMO, Smith's hair was TOO long in the first few episodes he shot. I much prefer his shorter hair in his later seasons.

That's cool. Although it also seems a bit counterproductive by making his look less distinctive.

I didn't care much for his original look. The baggy pants were strange, the jacket and the stark white shirt buttoned to top looked like the rest of the outfit was incomplete. Some various colored waistcoats, pants and perhaps an assortment of bolo ties or some other flare would have gone a long way.

This season and the variants he went through last season weren't much of an improvement. Honestly, the best he has looked since he took the role was seeing him in 11's old duds.

All I'll say is that the merchandising people must be doing their nuts in! Which 12th doctor do we put on the lunch boxes!!?

Well, the merchandising folks are generally directed to use his initial wardrobe, which is arguably his "definitive" look according to the BBC licensing people. This, despite the fact that it's appeared less times than all his other wardrobe sorties last year, and not at all this year except as a TARDIS hologram.

The comics people have generally stuck to that initial look as well, but given the months-long lead time for things it's not surprising that they haven't gotten the message yet. As for the action figure creators, they basically exist to make recolors of existing toy molds, so you can bet they'll ultimately have a figure for each look. Heck, only a couple weeks ago they announced several new Twelfth Doctor figures - with DIFFERENT COLORED SHIRTS!

Mark <--- But she has a new HAT..!

I think it's only a matter of time before an updated Twelfth Doctor from this current series is released with the longer hair and hoodie. There may even be a variant with sonic sunglasses.
