Fashion Verdict - The Twelfth Doctor, Post S8

So we were all hyped about Twelve's relatively minimalist outfit ever since those first pics were released just over a year ago:

How has this Doctor's "look" grown on you?

For me, I think it's already evolved away from this initial look. He seems much more comfy with the coat, but wearing a decidedly non-dapper holey sweater underneath at for much of the time after the first few episodes, and combining that with an even more pedestrian hoodie more than once. It looks really comfy and has no real air of officiousness about it - much like this Doctor.

The only location shot we've seen of Series 9 so far shows that he's maintained the same sweater and hoodie combination from Christmas:

No doubt it helps with the cold at this time of year, but I'm starting to identify this outfit as his real "look" even more than the first outfit we saw (which itself isn't really seen anymore, as the Doctor has replaced the cardigan underneath with a proper waistcoat as of the finale).

Thoughts? How does this Doctor's dress sense stack up for you?

Honestly, its not entirely memorable. Aside from the obvious visual nod to the Third Doctor's cape, I'm not a fan... but, I don't hate it, either.

With his "attack eyebrows" alone, this Doctor doesn't really need a very visible costume to stand out in a crowd, IMO.

I love the idea that this Doctor can mix things up with the basic costume of dark coat, trousers, and boots & go from fancy to casual depending on what he feels like at the moment. To me, it harkens back to an idea of the Doctor being able to blend in with most places he visits (particularly in current times on Earth).

I really like the coat and black jumper combo. I think it helps reflect that this Doctor is both extremely old, but has a renewed sense of youth about him.

Looks like his hair's a bit different too-longer and more puffy. Kind of like Pertwee whose hair became increasingly bouffant over the years.

Capaldi's hair changes in volume periodically. It was shorter in "Deep Breath" than it was immediately after the regeneration in "Time of the Doctor." So unless the Doc stopped and got a haircut sometime in between those episodes, well...

What I find interesting is how his look has evolved. When we first got a look at him the impression was of a very slick very Pertwee look but he's often been a lot scruffier. With the holey jumper (which I believe is Capaldi's own) or the hoodie he looks more like Hartnell or Troughton than Pertwee...yet the magician vibe remains, only he's more of a Dynamo/ street magician rather than the classic stage magician. Personally I prefer the holey jumper/hoodie look to the swish top button swag look, I think it suits him better.

I like how his costume feels a lot less costume-y than many of the other Doctors. He's just wearing dark, unintrusive clothes that don't draw attention to themselves, leaving that fantastic face to do all the work.

The only look of his that I didn't like was the black shirt with the while polka-dots from "Kill the Moon."

And I did really like his outfits in "Robot of Sherwood" & "Time Heist." Those were probably my favorites.

I'm wearing a cardigan that was the same as the 12th Doctors. Need I say more?

Hoodie I don't think so. Same goes for the Doc Martens. Neither would I wear unless I was planning to go back to school or if I wanted to steal some TVs.

"Street Magician" is probably the best two words I've come across to describe the Twelfth Doctor, both in look and attitude. He'll dress up in top swag as needed, but I think his default look is less sweet, more street.

:)

Be interesting to see how his look evolves (or even if it does)

I hope it will. Smith was pretty fashionable and that worked its way into his costume choices, and this Doctor seems to have even more leeway (not to mention the producers' trust) as a longtime fan.

I figured we could actually summarize what Twelve was wearing in his thirteen episodes, to give a general feel for his outfits. By default he wears his crombie coat, black dress pants, boots. Specific to each episode:

1. White shirt with cardigan (at the end)
2. White shirt with cardigan
3. Purple shirt
4. Holey jumper
5. Navy blue shirt / hoodie
6. Holey jumper (with brown work coat)
7. Black shirt with white polka dots
8. "Salute to Pertwee" suit / tuxedo
9. White shirt with cardigan
10. Holey jumper
11/12. White shirt with black waistcoat
13. Holey jumper with hoodie

So his initial look was fully featured in only two episodes, while the holey jumper has been seen in four aired, and at least two more filming! Everything else is variations on the initial look, but that cardigan seems to be leaving the wardrobe.

Good point about the Doctor's hair...I've noticed it's happened with other Doctor's as well-Tom's hair initially looks a bit like Pertwee's in the Planet of the Spider's footage, but in the next scene ( in "Robot") it's become it's familiar curly look.

Davison's hair I think was a darker, browner color (His natural color? I've noticed his hair is darker in some of his other productions such as All Creatures Great and SMall). when he first shows up in "Logopolis", and throughout the season there's some discontinuity with it as the episodes were filmed out of order. (Compare "Four to Doomsday" with "Castrovalva").

Smith's hair is also noticeably longer in "End of Time" than it is in "The Eleventh Hour". Also in Victory of the Daleks and the season 5 Angels episodes it also looks a bit longer because I think those were the first filmed.

I think in most cases, it's because of the gap in production between the regeneration and the next season.

I remember a long ago behind-the-scenes article which mentioned that it took a devil of a time to get Tom's hair permed to resemble Pertwee's for the regeneration and brief post-regeneration sequence.

Thread revive! I have a few thoughts on the Doctor's look so far in S9, following on what we've seen up to "The Zygon Invasion". Fashion spoilers follow, if indeed this is a thing.

To me, this episode firmly places this Doctor into a "rock star" persona and definitely away from the "stage / street magician" thing he was doing, arguably awkwardly, last season. From the clothes he wears to the glasses and guitar (almost surprised he doesn't carry the latter around with him at all times) to even the expression of his personality ("I just like poncing around in a plane", etc.), the Doctor has settled into this regeneration and certainly seems so much more at ease with himself.

Is it out of character for this character to have changed his look? Not really, in my view. If this Doctor is a rock star, then he's one who has changed his look and persona very much like any long-lived rock star will. Think of the Beatles going through their schoolboy and then more liberal looks and music - same group, different times in their career.

It's just that we know later, the Doctor will revert his look somewhat. I wonder if there's something behind it.

I think his new outfit is representative of his ongoing character arc.

In season eight, he was undergoing an identity crisis, brooding over whether he was a good man or not, and was quite emotionally distant and cold. His appearance represented this - tightly buttoned shirts, short cropped hair etc.

Now, he's a lot more comfortable in himself and is more open and has loosened up. His clothing this season is a lot more relaxed and casual and he's let his hair grow out.

There is a certain logic to his look, but it does seem to be a curious evolution, especially given that Capaldi had so much input into the original stage magician look and really seemed to be going for a Pertwee vibe, right now he's probably closer to Troughton, I wonder if it isn't just the Doctor who went through an identity crisis but Capaldi himself!

And you're right Mark, given there have been photos flying around of him looking a lot more velvety and bouffant later on in the season you do have to wonder why this will be.

Whilst I don't want us to go back to the 'uniform' days of Five and Six, I do think the Doctor needs some level of consistency. The outfit is kinda working for 12 and I think the aging rock star tag is probably the best way to describe it, but sometimes it does feel a little like the Doctor just picks up the nearest thing to hand.

I think that's exactly how this Doctor rolls. Without warning, he'll suddenly switch back to a more fancy outfit simply because he wants to. The only real consistency may be his boots and that his coats usually have red lining.
