Fargo, season 2

That execution march came DIRECTLY out of Miller's Crossing. I half expected her to start yelling "Look in your heart!" Whoever is directing this is a student of the Coen Brothers. There's already been other scenes and exchanges that directly parallel things that happened in No Country For Old Men, Raising Arizona, Blood Simple and The Man Who Wasn't There.

^That's what I said! Hubby didn't get it.

That was brutal, though. But not a surprise.

My favorite line, "You're a crap cop, you know that, right?"

The scene between Betsy and Karl was sweet. But what was up in the sheriff's house? Is he an UFO fanatic or something? Why did that freak her out so much?

Tonight's episode had a few nice nods to "The Big Lebowski", the most notable being the song "Just Dropped In", but also Mike's line "Sometimes, there's a man.."

So, do Peggy and Ed survive and escape to begin a new life in California? Dumb luck seems to be on their side so far.

It seemed to me like they were trying to hold Dodd for ransom. That Ed is the one calling them up saying he knows where Dodd is. I think he has Dodd tied up somewhere.

Oh Jeez, he's in the trunk. Ed and Peggy seem to have embraced the criminal life. And it really was Mike's lucky day.

And tonight's episode, there is a scene that is similar to the coin toss scene in No Country For Old Men.

Also that scene is making me realize that that character is awfully similar to Chigern.

Holy Crap! What a great episode. Yes, Hanzee is very Chigern-like here--very menacing--but a bit more human than Chigern; we can at least sympathize with Hanzee a little when we see how horrible the world treats him. When Dodd calls him a dumb half-breed, we aren't all that surprised that he turns on him. If Dodd has simply not been so abusive, he might have lived.

Wow. Peggy has truly flipped her proverbial wig. Eesh. But, as it turns out, she's the more dangerous of the dumbass-duo.

Can't help but be impressed by Keith Russo's incredible score. That mad deserves an award; the music here wonderful--like another character in the show.

What a fantastic season this has turned out to be!

So many twists and turns in one ep, wow. This might just be my favourite episode of the whole series. I realized last week that I enjoy season 2 a bit more than the first so far, even though season 1 is much closer to the movie in terms of plot structure and atmosphere...

Another great episode. The only thing I'm a little on the fence about is Hanzee shooting Dodd. I get that he was feeling a little trod upon, but that made about as much sense as Vincent shooting Jules and asking if anyone was going to finish that Big Kahuna Burger.

Forget Kansas City, The Gerhardt clan are doing a good enough job massacring themselves.

That may be part of it. I think Hanzee realizes that the Gerhardts are falling apart and has decided "Fuck this. I'm out."

Dodd repeatedly calling him a "half-breed" and "mongrel" probably didn't help . . . .

I think season 2 is much more similar to the movie than season 1. Season 1 I felt it was much harder to believe the conceit that it was based on real events. Most of season 2 has felt more like things that real human beings might do, like the movie.

I think Hanzee decided to kill Dodd the moment he shot those men. He was sick of taking orders from people who saw him as an outsider and a servant.

I like the way Peggy is characterized. She's like a posterchild of cognitive dissonance, she's trying to depart farther and farther from reality as reality gets harder and harder to accept. He behavior, oddly, is very realistic.

Probably my favorite show right now... surprisingly. How can you beat season 1? A slow burn, that's how.

The haircut/scalping analogy (stretching here) and the albeit quick buildup to betrayal was really well handled. Twin Peaks grounded, I say.

So happy there's a season 3. Now what about The Americans?

I'm more and more convinced that they're deliberately doing a riff on "Macbeth" here, with nice-guy Ed becoming harder and more ruthless as time goes by and Peggy slowly losing her mind a la Lady Macbeth . . .

And, yeah, Kirsten Dunst needs to win an Emmy or something for her performance as Peg.

I liked the car conversation between Peggy and Ed. Neither was really listening to the other and it seemed to illustrate their marriage dynamic. She listened to her imaginary therapist more than she ever did Ed. Also "The Butcher" is actually earning his reputation now, although it is more Peggy's reputation.
So Bear, Charlie (in prison) and Floyd are the only Gerhardts left? Will any be left standing? Hanzee came very close to changing his life but it looks like that boat might have sailed according to the preview. If he wasn't such a cold blooded killer I might have felt a little sorry for him.
And MM is going to be so disappointed....

I wonder if we'll ever get an appearance by Francis McDormand, if it isn't handled as just a gimick I would love to see Marge again.

I'm floored by this plan of Hanzee's to create a three way shootout between the police, the Gerhardts and Kansas City. It's amazing this season how they keep weaving everything together while still making it feel credibly like the logical outcome of the characters' decisions.

Don't know if I like this historian lecture element.

Edit: UFO was a kind of hilarious cinematic touch. Suggests that Lou is the writer of history. It's the truth as Lou believes it that a UFO appeared.
