I was inspired by my viewing of the remastered "The Ultimate Computer" just moments ago, and seeing the striking parallels between that episode and TNG's "The Nth Degree," I have come up with this fanfic request (I don't have time to write it in detail, alas):
A combination of the episodes "The Ultimate Computer," "Lonely Among Us," and "The Nth Degree," but within a wartime setting.
Like in "Lonely Among Us," a few officers and then the heavy cruiser's own captain would be influenced by a sentient, energy-based lifeform from a nearby energy cloud (but near a hostile border). Like in "The Nth Degree," the protagonist (in this case the captain) will use the knowledge of the sentient presence to link "self" into the heavy cruiser's systems to save the deteriorating Starfleet sensor array nearby (observing the energy cloud and nearby enemy movement across the border) from exploding and then later on foil a failed disconnection attempt on the part of the supporting cast. Like "The Ultimate Computer," there will be some sort of battle, wherein the ship - under the control of the sentient presence through the captain - disables at least two "hostile" ships (preparing for a buildup leading to some sort of military operation across the hostile border).
The ending should be similar to that of "Lonely Among Us," with the remaining pursuing ships ceasing hostilities (like in "The Ultimate Computer") arriving at the energy cloud to aid in the rescue of the captain.
