Fan reactions to Starfleet Academy's female Jem'Hadar/Klingon hybrid character

I did initially think a comedic actress for a Jem'Hybridar was an unusual choice then I remembered Virak'kara from To the Death and the way he looked around before leaning in to ask Dax her age and his you dont look it reaction. Jem'Hadar can be funny.

I really don't see any reason at all there couldn't be a lady Jem'Hadar, even in the DS9 timeframe if they really wanted to.

So, I looked at the source of this idea. One Jem'Hadar soldier comments "there are no women" to Dax, in an episode were it is demonstrated that Vorta withhold information from the Jem'Hadar. While I don't doubt those bred in birthing chambers believe what they are told but that doesn't mean no females. Only none to their fiercely loyal and bred and shortlived soldiers.

I will say that a female Jem'Hadar/Klingon hybrid strikes me as improbable, but the last time I checked, hating something just because it's improbable is a particularly silly form of bigotry.

I doubt that the Founders created the Jem'Hadar out of whole cloth. There was almost certainly a natural form of the species, reproducing by natural means (albeit not necessarily sexual; there's a throwaway line in some fairly old ST novel, as I recall, declaring that some never-referenced-again character was "budding"), deriving sustenance by the quaint, old-fashioned process known as "eating," and not dependent upon an external source of ketracel white.

I always assumed Tosk were the basic source for the Jem'Hadar

Multiple posts touched on the idea, including yours. The most explicit was:

Also, “discussing the character’s origins” is not same as talking about her “body size”.

Respectfully, do not put words or concepts in my mouth. At no point have I made any reference to that idea, and I do not appreciate the insertion of that connection. I have only seen a Twitter post by "ThatStarWarsGirl" and if she made any such reference there, I do not recall it. Her reference was to the concept of Jem'Hadar reproduction (or lack thereof), and my posts in this thread are based on my replies thereto.

More broadly, the idea that anyone who might criticize the inclusion of a Jem'Hadar hybrid is trying to body-shame the actress or is otherwise being toxic is itself toxic and inappropriate.

Huh? Speaking of putting words in other peoples mouths, where the hell did I say that you were talking about her body size? I was referencing the original post that started this thread. In there it is claimed that certain people online are talking about the “woke agenda”, possibly complaining about the actresses ethnicity, gender and body size.

You said that “it's funny to posit that the producers created the character in order to create buzz while also dismissing folks who discuss the character's origins as just chasing clicks” and I was merely pointing out that what people online allegedly are doing is not just “discussing the character’s origins”.

I didn't say you made the claim explicitly. I said posts touched on the idea of the claim, including yours. Broadly read (as per the original bit of humor that was literally prefaced with the word "funny" but which evidently hit a tough crowd), the concept of buzz and the creation of it appears in your post several times, from their playing with expectations to your being fascinated by the look and the fannish-but-looks-cool bit.

The point of my joke, being that both the producers and their critics are chasing views yet one of the two is universally vilified here, clearly landed poorly, but I was explicitly referring to character-origin critics and none of the other stuff.

You've now made it clear that connection was not your intent, but there was a lack of distinction in the post I replied to between what I was saying and what folks claim these other people are saying. You've now corrected that, so we're good on that point.

Everyone else was having a collective nerdgasm about the wall of names but the female Jem’Hadar Starfleet officer was probably the thing that most grabbed and intrigued me about the trailer. I’m not confident it’ll be well handled but I’m intrigued to learn more.

Its 800 years into the future from DS9. Things change.

It’s far different for the Klingon redesign in DIS, set 10 years before TOS. Or even the Gorn redesign in SNW, several years before “Arena”.

I don’t even see how anyone can make an argument for what SFA is doing here. It does not break continuity at all.

IMHO the easiest explanation is there are still only male Jem'Hadar, but they're capable of siring children with other races, and her mother is a Klingon.

While one could argue that it's weird the Founders allowed the Jem'Hadar, as an engineered race which was grown in a lab, to be fertile, it could be argued that there would be just that much extra intimidation if you feared your daughters could be kidnapped and made to sire half-alien babies.

This of course implies 800 years of Odo running the place made absolutely no difference and there has been no development whatsoever in the Dominion. I think it's a harder sell to say the entire universe stagnated at 2375
