Famous Crab Nebula Shoots Off Mysterious Flares

My mind is working more along the lines of assuming Janeway is wherever Ceiling Cat looks down from, and she just nailed the bastard for spying on her, which would work with her expression. I just don't know how to make that witty.

I didn't ask to be insulted and people have continued to do this...

No-one is insulting you Jetfire; we're just having fun with the story. :)

The nebula is 6000 light years away, and the gamma rays are not being focussed towards us.

It's analogous to seeing a 250 watt street light being turned on 1 kilometer away. Which is unlike having a 250 watt laser beam pointing at you from 1 kilometer away.

If that was my only way to get some coffee I wouldn't hesitate going in either! -heck, I'd even consider going to a starbucks

Even Janeway would avoid Starbucks. She would probably torpedo that shit from a distance.

Indeed; "Your best firing solution Mr. Tuvok."

You really should let the doctor do something about that incontinence problem of yours Neelix.

You know, I bet it would have been awesome to have seen the original supernova that led to the formation of this nebula back in 1054 (or, as it was known in those days, almost elevenses :p).

I'll be watching Betelgeuse with great interest (only because I can't see Eta Carinae from where I am on the planet :() - but if it doesn't go boom in my lifetime, I'll instruct my descendants to do so for their own sake. :bolian:

I didn't ask to be insulted and people have continued to do this...I was just curious about this and thought people here would find it interesting.

MOD Please close this thread.
There's really no reason for it to be closed. Nobody is insulting you so much as not taking it as seriously as you would like; not much to be done about that.

Several of us have given you a serious response, however. Since you're not happy with the way the Thread is going, it's probably just best to abandon it to its fate at this point.

Does Jetfire normally have no avatar and not use his friends list, or has this just happened?

I'm sorry for not taking your thread seriously Jetfire. :(

^^ I don't know. I hope he hasn't decided to leave because of this.

He normally has an avatar, and I was on his friends list (and he on mine).
We were all goofing around a bit, having fun, but that's no reason to leave. I gave him a serious answer but added a little humor to it.
Most everyone else here did the same. It's not worth leaving over, Jetfire.

Indeed, If you think my goofing around is too much for a thread on celestial objects please tell me you think I'm being foolish!

This. Although I must admit that my replies as well as several others here didn't add to the OP's original intent, so I wouldn't be surprised if he felt the way he did about his thread being derailed and the off-topics derailed further, when all he wanted was a simple answer to a valid question.

Eventually.

For what it's worth, if he really wanted a serious discussion, the Science and Technology forum might have been a better place for this thread. If you post something in Misc, you're pretty much asking for jokes and sarcasm.

Quite an assumption. Not everyone in Miscellaneous is a joker and snarker (all of the time) and there are people who do try to make something of any serious topic, whether they know what they're talking about or not - but they do put in the effort. Similarly, a serious discussion is not necessarily guaranteed in S&T (although things may have changed since the last time I was here).

That said, yes, the temptation to carry on the humour is strong in Misc., something I am definitely guilty of.

I think we should get this topic back onto the subject of crabs and nebulas and flares (not flared trousers), if possible.

9th post in. Pretty good for Miscellaneous.
Then he got a more complete and practical answer to his question at the 15th post.
