Absolutely seemless in the way it fit after BoBW. I glad the writers didn't force a trip to Earth just to have this episode but they were there to defend and then to be repaired-what a great time to catch up w/the kin.

No phaser fights, no (not much) Treknobabble-just some raw emotions. Not only good Trek, but great TV.

I agree, a great ep; though I was hoping for an explanation on why Riker's now a commander again. Do field promotions not count when you rescue your captain?

Family is a classic episode and nicely showcases Patrick Stewart's expemplary acting skills. I love it.

I love Family. It's my favorite episode of all time. The guest cast is superb and I feel this is Patrick Stewart's finest perfomance as Picard.

^^ Well I always thought the "I will make them pay" speech from FC was Picards finest performance in Trek, I love him as an actor and thought he was great the entire series but that was a blow away.

As for "Family" yes I loved this episode, I liked the animosity between Picard and his brother as well as Worfs parents.

One line I really liked was from Guinan talking to his mom and dad.

"When he stands here looking for home he doesnt look toward the Klingon Empire, Hes looks toward you"

Dunno why I like that line so much I just do lol.

That was great acting by him too.

I call this episode the end of the first unofficial trilogy arc in Star Trek. It was beautiful how it tied into Best of Both Worlds and developed the characters involved. One of Trek's best hours that unfortunately gets so overlooked.

^I always forget about the movies. When talking about the series I don't even think about the movies so yeah if we're talking about all of Trek, than those movies are the first trilogy.

IIRC, Family was written as part three of the BOBW 'trilogy' but TPTB didn't want it to be an official trilogy. It's always been one of my faves, right behind Inner Light. How is it that Patrick Stewart never got that Emmy?

Family is one of my favorite episodes of TNG. Instead of brushing the hurt of BOBW under the rug, it brought things out and dealt with them. A precursor to the way things would be done on Deep Space Nine, and a more direct precursor to the Enterprise episode, Home.

I agree with you 100%. Stewart was fantastic in delivering that line in FC. The exchange with Worf, "If you were any other man I would KILL you where you stand!" and later, " I think you're the bravest man I've ever known." were simply fantastic as well. Great, GREAT movie.

Stewart in Family was tremendous and also in The Inner Light. What an actor.

Not to get too far off track but fwiw, Stewart is 100x the actor Shatner is. However, Shatner's saving grace is that he was born to play James Tiberius Kirk. They are so different yet both so classic.

I'm glad they didn't stick some lame anomaly of the week bullshit into this episode.

Ya know now that you mention it your right. There was no danger to earth or aliens taking over the ship, which in later years the family aspect of this episode would have probably become a sub-plot.

Actually, they were very close to adding a B plot involving either a child stowaway or some sort of science problem. In the TNG Campanion it says that Rick Berman insisted on one of those things, but after a few weeks Michael Piller convinced him to just go with the crew's personal lives for the full hour.

Thank god for Michael Piller then.

It should have spoke volumes to Berman about the series, no we dont need a threat or a space battle EVERY week to enjoy quality entertainment.

Jeremy Kemp is a fine actor, but I still remember him mostly as the East German General in Top Secret!.

"Let me know if there's any change in his condition."
(hangs up phone)
"He's dead."

Don't get me wrong, i can appreciate some of the nice character developent, and looking back i can see the start of threads that were further developed as TNG went on.

But as an 8 year-old, i had just waited one of the longest summers in my life for TNG to return to our screens. (On it's first run in the UK, the BBC showed BOBW Pt1 and the following week BOBW Pt2 then broke for the summer showing Family after the hiatus).

So i remember the "super cool" episodes that i got before the break, eagerly sat down to watch my fave show, watched 'Family' and felt..well, "meh".

I know, i know, probably not designed for the 8 year-old audience in mind, but i just remember wanting more. I'd be interested to see if everybody elses positive first viewings were due to seeing it directly after BOBW Pt2?
