I'm watching "family business" right now, it's the first time we see ishka, quark's mother.. moogi... she's so much better in this episode that the actress who played ishka later on in the series.

Don't ya think?

Honestly I didn't even realize it was a different actress till years after they had switched and DS9 was over by then. So I guess I didn't notice because she was such a small character.

Well that's Andrea Martin, of Second City Television renown. According to Memory Alpha she didn't return after Family Business because of the heavy Ferengi makeup. Which, when using the full head prosthetic as well as the stifling facial prosthetics, is a pretty heavy demand on a guest star. Even Armand Shimmerman was the only one to do it regularly, while the others wore that head cowl thing to cover a big ol' hole back there. Being a Ferengi could really disturb more claustrophobic types.

I believe Andrea was the only appearance in the franchise by a former SCTV player. I would have loved to see Bob and Doug as Pakleds though.

lol but come on if u get a part on DS9 would u really complain about having to wear make up.. no u'd be damn grateful right?!!

As if DS9 was a show people would kill to be on, be realistic here.
Unlike the average actor I'm a fan and I wouldn't wear this awful make up covering my entire head, I wouldn't even make it to getting the make up applied, I would have noped out of there the moment they tried making my face mold.

Have you ever had glue on your face, I have all be it skin glue? It's not exactly comfortable. So sure I can certainly understand why some people would prefer not to have things stuck to their face.

I'd pass on Ferengi makeup too; though I might accept Klingon applications. Also, to a lot of actors I think they don't even get the whole Star Trek thing and for them it's just a job. Which is probably better than going into it bearing the mantle of Cultural Prophet that Hollywood execs are only too happy to do. For example, rather than being a secularized commentary on religious avatars, Behr's divine Star Trek Captain is also an examen against the self-importance of Hollywood producers themselves. But I digress.

The makeup made them look exactly the same. The first Iskha was a little less goofy, so I think she would have been better for the Feminist storylines, but not for the pure comedy episodes.

I actually always thought Cecily Adams vastly outperformed Andrea Martin in the role, but this was camouflaged by the fact that "Family Business" was by far the best script Ishka ever had. Andrea Martin is a spectacular actress of whom I am a huge fan, and she acquits herself well, but you can feel her fighting the makeup the whole time. I see why she didn't want to come back. For me, Cecily Adams is (or, sadly, was) just better at the skill of prosthetic acting. That was one of the things that struck me most on my DS9 rewatch, the degree to which facial prosthetic acting is a specialized skill quite different from "regular" acting, and being good at one doesn't necessarily have much relation to being good at the other.

^ That is true. Colm Meaney was one of my favorites on DS9 but he didn't respond well to the Klingon prosthetics in "Apocalypse Rising."

We are smart, eh?
