FALLOUT 3 - discussion thread

Ah, the cheats almost make me wish I was playing the PC version instead.
But, 25 hours later... it's too late. :p

^ Just wait till the mods come out. Theres already one to get rid of the level cap.

Also in hacking there are secret hidden selections you can click. Basically any closed brackets that that have no brackets in between can be clicked on and will get rid of a bad choice or replenish one of your missed choices. So liked (@&**) if you click on the first bracket the whole thing should light up. But something like (@#{) wouldn't work because there's that extra differing bracket in between. Even [] would work, just as long as there are no interrupting brackets. And something like ($#*(**) would count as two different brackets, but not<#$**($*> because of that different one in the middle.

Out of curiosity, shall we have a quick show of hands as to how many rigged the nuke or deactivated it? Personally I always go the "hero" route first time out though I fully intend to replay as an utter bastard on my second go.

i don't know about the companion, i just sent dogmeat to vault 101, but i saved megaton just because it's a comvenient place to heal for free and i'm trying to do the good route

Yeah, considering that it's the first place you go to and also the only place you can find actually dump your stuff without fear of it being gone, I saved the town too.

I've got so many sets of armor that it's not even funny.

Actually I've found that your stuff stays wherever you leave it, even in the wastes. So do bodies for that matter.

It'll stay probably enough for a few fast travels, but probably not long term. They even warn you to store your stuff in a "safe place", so there must be a timer that causes things to disappear after a while.

Stuff definitely does disappear after awhile. I killed a guy who happened to have a +5 science outfit, which I just left behind figuring I'd never need it. Then I ended up being exactly 5 short of a hack attempt so I went back for it much later and the corpse was gone. I'm not sure what the timer on all the stuff is though.

I saved the town because I always go good on the first play through. Then on the 2nd I go full evil and destroy the people that annoyed me on the first play through.

Urg... I'm getting annoyed with the companions and I think I"m just going to ditch them for the rest of the game. First, they die... and often. Second their pathing stinks. I hop down some small ledge and the companions freak out either running back and forth in front of the cliff or running around the long way as they aggro every bad guy in the building and get themselves killed. If not that, then they aggro on some enemy in the next room and just sit there aiming at a wall. Go through a door while they're even a little far away from you and they just wait inside the building for you to come back. Going through the dunwitch building with two companions was just a major pain in the ass. Third they don't get your perks, so it makes some of the perks useless. Light step becomes useless because even though you don't set off a mine, your buddies most definitely will. The Animal buddies perk is worthless because even if the creatures don't attack you, they'll attack your buddies so you'll have to kill them anyways.

Just now I was in a mountainous area and I hopped down a small ledge... bam both comanions are gone. I run around the mountainside looking for them and there's no trace of them. I fast wait two hours, nothing. Vanished. I wouldn't mind the guy dying, except that I was using him as a packmule to hold some gear, including tesla armor. The guy has vanished in to thin air with a bunch of my loot. Eventually I see some action on a far hillside and I take out the sniper rifle to get a closer look... it's my dog waaaay on the other hillside fighting off a bunch of death claws by himself. I decide, ok, I'll just go with the dog from now on and keep him close. The first hill I cross my dog gets stuck between two rocks and can't follow. Just great.

If the dog worked like a pet in Wow I would definitely keep it. As it is it's too annoying, even after making the dog immortal.

I may be wrong but I'm pretty sure stuff stays put so long as you stash it IN something, like a garbage can, locker or whatever container you can find nearby.

A note about Rivet City, it's a serious pain in the arse trying to find someone specific since they're always moving around. It took me a good 30 mins to track down Harkness again! Speaking of loosing people, the bloke that you sell scrap to in Megaton has vanished! Can't find him anywhere at any time of the day or night. Is this a known glitch, or is he supposed to bugger off at some point? Slightly annoying either way since I have 50 odd bits of scrap sitting in a drawer at my house! Grr.

If you have the pc version and you want to make your companions essential NPC's here are some console codes:

SetEssential 000156f6 1 <-- charon
SetEssential 0006a772 1 <--dogmeat
SetEssential 000156e5 1 <-- Star paladin cross
SetEssential 00000a71 1 <--- jericho
SetEssential 0003d34e 1 <--- fawkes
SetEssential 00003a22 1 <-- sydney
SetEssential 000156a2 1 <--- clover
SetEssential 00027f65 1 <--- butch

Input everything up to the 1 in to the console. (which you can access using the ~ key) So now they'll go unconscious instead of dying.

Personally I only made my dog essential.

I am assuming that pc cheats will disable achievements? Anyone know for sure?

Yes, it is a glitch and he is now dead. What happens is he falls through the world under the water processing plant and dies.

Unfortunately if you haven't found him walking around town or in a bar, he's probably dead somewhere in town. There's some glitch in megaton where npc's will end up falling off of something and dying on their own because of pathing issues. Like I've had an npc fall through the floor then fall out of the sky and die for no good reason. If I'm not mistaken though there might be another guy that will buy scrap off of you, had something to do with robots I think. If you find his corpse and are playing the pc version you can just go to the ~ console, click on the body, then type "resurrect".

I have butchered raiders across the wasteland. I've turned Talon Mercs into my bitches. I can kill 4 Ghouls in a single VATS session. I've watched the head's of Super Mutants explode from a single bullet from the barrel of my Lincoln Repeater. I grin at the sight of Enclave soldiers, they are no match for me.

But I still run like little girl from Giant Radscorpions.

Who doesn't?! Especially when the game glitches and they jump a good 10 foot closer than they were a second ago.

As for my suicidal scrap merchant, is there anyway to spawn him with the console, assuming his corpse is nowhere to be found?

I’m currently at level 17 and enjoying the game much more than I thought I would.
The comments about the time sucking are so true!
I stayed up till 1:30am Tuesday night and 2:15am last night.
Last night was about a 5hr session. Because I finally got through the massive maze and made it to the radio station, I just had to see what 3 dog was gonna tell me.
Man I’m tired this morning.

My main complaint is clearing a huge area then getting to a door at the end that says I need a key to open.
That happen again last night in the Vaultec building, very aggravating.

A minor complaint (well maybe not complaint) is that some of the areas are so massive that it’s easy to get lost or not know if you already been there if there are no bodies to use as bread crumbs.
Sometimes you have to back track a lot too because there a so many tunnels that go in different directions. It’s a bit frustrating.

I also have quite a few unfinished quests because of not having a key or couldn’t unlock something because my skills a not high enough.
I finally just got tired of running into a door or safe that always seemed to pick the next level up from where I was to be able to un-lock.
I said screw it and maxed out my lock picking and computer hacking skills. Now I have to revisit waaay to many areas.

Now I'm going to be smug and say I foresaw the need for good lock picking skills. Based in previous experience with the first two Fallout games I tagged speech; since most quests require allot of chitchat, Small guns: since that's what you depend on for 75% of the game and lock picking, well because of what you just said. These are also the only skills I assigned points to until I had them all at about 90% (since I found a bunch of outfits that nudge the skills up by 5 or 10 points) then started working on the others. There's a trade off of course since my Barter is at about 20 (even with the roving merchant suit) my science skill is about 60, my steal is something like 14 and I think my my explosive is less than 40, but these have always been secondary skills IMO, even though they're allot more balanced in this game.

Anyone else miss the ability to quickly switch between two weapons without going into the inventory?

Walk to where you want walter the water filtration guy to be. then open the console

prid 0003b59
<enter>
moveto player
<enter>

and walter should appear on your exact spot clipping in to you, just walk away a bit and talk to him. I'm not sure if this will create another walter or just bring one to you. if he shows up dead, go in to the console, click on the corpse, then type "ressurect"

Don't do anything between either entry like close the console or anything like that since you have to keep the current object as whatever it is you're trying to spawn, and closing the console will clear that info.

Spawning creatures is the "player.placeatme" code, but I can't find Walter's actual hex number online or on the bethesda forums. So far I've just used the code to spawn a super mutant behemoth during the first birthday party. Fun for everyone!

I had the same frustration with the large maps till I realized that the local map could be zoomed out so you can see what you've missed in a larger area, it even marks doors for you. Unfortunately it's only in 2d.

Oh yes the Lincoln repeater totally rules. Probably my favorite weapon in the game that doesn't launch 8 mini-nukes at a time.

well, turned the game back into the movie store today, show of hands on who has enslaved red VS saved her (and also saved big town)

When in your inventory, hold down a number key (1 through 8) and click on the weapon you want to assign to that number.
