FALLOUT 3 - discussion thread

Having had more time to play the game, I must say that it is incredibly awesome.

Nothing like slowing down time and blowing a person's head off. I've been having a ton of fun sneaking around and scoring critical headshots on pretty much everyone unlucky enough to get in my way.

I made it to Megaton, which granted isn't far. I've yet to get the vats? combat system down, but good times so far.

I put the game down for now, I'm addicted to Fable

I know I'm still at the start of the game basically, but I'm pissed that the handgun (10mm) doesn't even sound like a gun.

Just made it to Rivet City. This game is AMAZING.

Bugs are annoying though, I mean it drives me nuts when Three Dog goes on his "Hello Chiiiiiiildren! Endless intro loops.

The worst bug I've had so far is Dogmeat disappearing on me for a few hours and then suddenly I get a message telling me he is waiting for me at Vault 101. Huh.

I've run into a couple of weird bugs, too. I was in a merc base and used VATS to attack a couple of guys as they came around a corner. Instead of firing my shot, the game just got stuck in VATS. I couldn't move my character or fire, but the two enemies were still shooting me. I was stuck in the VATS slow mo with the camera pointed pointed towards me as if waiting to fire. I had to reload my save right before that a few times before VATS worked properly there. Never had a problem with it like at any other time.

I finally fixed my game crashing and freezing up in VATS glitch, I had to turn off Anti-Aliasing and Anisotropic Filtering. Now the only time the game ever crashes is when I hit the exit button, but everything in the game has horrible jaggies and the many of the textures just look horrible. And this is on an 8800 GTS 320MB.

They had better put out a patch soon, I'm getting tired of Fallout 3 looking like a 6 year old game.

Hmmm, I almost got F3 for PC, though I have an 8800GT with a G92 core and 512MB of ram.

8800GTX here, running nice and smooth at 1920x1200 with 4xAA and 8xAF... I have started getting a few random crashes which strangely happened after I updated my video drivers. But they're still pretty uncommon thus far.

Now you know a possible fix if you start getting crashes every 5-10 minutes. :techman:

Well like I said my crashes are uncommon... played for about two hours tonight, not a single crash. I played for quite a few hours on Sunday and only crashed 2 times or so.

I've been playing this pretty obsessively the last week or so. Really enjoy the game.

I'm also having trouble finding Leo's stash. As far as I can tell it should have been in the desk, since you can only open it without stealing after you finish the quest and it's filled with mentats. I think it's just bugged.

Lockpicking is pretty easy. You only have two parameters, the angle of the bobby pin and turning the lock. If you try to turn the lock and it stops moving the bobby pin is not the right angle. The closer you are to the correct angle for the bobby pin, the more the lock will turn. So from there it's just a matter of narrowing down the angle through trial and error. If you push to hard the pin will break.

For hacking you click on a word, and it'll tell you x/x correct. Which means that x letter(s) AND it's position is correct. So if you select "fighting" and it only says 2/8 correct, then you can figure that all "ing" words are incorrect because that would require at least 3/8 to be correct. The best is clicking on a 0/8 word since all you have to do is find the word with no matching letters to the one you clicked first.

I'm near the capital now hanging out in the ghoul city. I've become the king of megaton with my own swanky pad, which is nice and much nicer than the houses you can buy in Oblivion. I only wish I did the bomb quest sooner to get the house since I did that as one of my last quests in the town. Would have been much nicer to have my own place that whole time doing those stupid survival guide quests. But my explosives skill was too low for a long time.

I'm extremely annoyed with myself right now though for not saving often enough. I did something out of order, so I don't think I can progress with a quest because one of the contacts was killed by someone from a different quest. My last non-autosave was hours earlier so I'm kind of suck. Playing it on the PC, I've just been using cheat codes to fix glitches in the game. (Primarily getting stuck between rocks.) But I don't think I can un-do this mess. urg. I can't wait to play this again as evil incarnate blowing up everything in sight and being a major jerk.

Finally got my first companion though, which is pretty cool.

Yeah, they can. I'm not sure how to tell how they're doing though. My dog seems to be able to take an insane amount of punishment, but some chick I picked up died from a single crit in the first battle I was in. I don't know if it's glitched but I don't even get the option to stim pack the dog anymore. Maybe the dog is keyed to my stats or something.

If anyone is messing around with the player.additem codes 0005deee is a fun item if you get frustrated and want to wipe a town out.

Strange.
I'm about 20hr in and the only glitch I've come across is when my dog was blocking the door, I tried to push past him and he floated into the air!

He stayed there too until I got far enough away for him to start following me then he made a jumping down type motion.

Fallout 3 PC Patch to be Released Later Today.

"In a recent Q&A section with fans on Eurogamer, Pete Hines has stated that a PC patch will be released later today that will fix several issues that PC users have been experiencing.

"As far as fixes, there's a PC update coming out later today that will address a few PC-specific things that have come up. Can't give you any details yet beyond that as far as what else might be in the works for any of the three platforms."
