FALLOUT 3 - discussion thread

I was just discussing the game with some friends here that bought it Tuesday too and they were teasing me because they had gotten so far into the game and I didn't.

The thing is they are big Oblivion fans and I'm not.

I don't really care for the slow paced find this or that the add it to your character this way or that way and you only get so many points to do it with.
I'm also not a big fan of so many choices in conversations.

Basically I just want to play.
I don't want to put a ton of thought into "hmmm...should upgrade my karma or my luck or whatever??".

Anyhoo they are asking why I spent so much time in 101 and Megaton?

I'm like well I'm looking in every nook and cranny and picking up just everything because I don't know what I'll need or who whats to trade for whatever item.

Like I said, I don't really play these types of games but I figure This one will be a good one to maybe bridge that gap because of it's shooter elements.

I have to admit I am having fun with it but I can easily put it down though too.

It's an RPG, thankfully with a bit of depth, and not a shooter. What did you expect? Far Cry 2?

Obviously you didn't understand my post.

Obviously you didn't understand my post.

Is there some hidden subtext I should be made aware of? ;)

It looked like most of your complaints could be summed up with "I don't like RPGs". I'm genuinely just wondering if you were expecting more of a straight up shooter, because complaints about hunting for items and having stats to manage seem like criticisms of the genre rather than the specific game in question.

I'm having a problem with the drug addict dudes quest.

I'm supposed to "loot his stash of mentats"... where is it? I got all the mentats out of the desk he was sitting at, but the quest still reads as active in my quest log and there's a marker pointing somewhere in the water treatment plant but I can't find his stash. Anyone?

EDIT: Also PS3 owners, the game pauses for a second and the screen blurs whenever someone on your friends list goes on or offline. It's pretty damn annoying and requires a patch. No clue how that got through Q&A.

Is that Leo Stahl from Megaton? I'm kind of annoyed because I failed the Speech test and now I pretty much can't do anything about that quest. Ugh.

It's replayablity value though. I love how there are some things you won't be able to do if you don't have the right character build. That's one thing which pisses me off about Oblivion - the actual RPG side of it is broken and worthless. There is only one character class, and it's jack-of-all trades.

Something is seriously wrong in an "RPG" where you can become the head of the MAGES GUILD without casting a single spell. /rant

To be fair, this is a fairly heavy RPG. I'm surprised no one "professional" has made the comparison yet, but it really is a Western developed STALKER... with more dice rolling.

I remember reading a few previews where the comparison was made, but while there are many similarities (probably more so than Oblivion, in many ways) they are worlds apart in tone and atmosphere. And dice rolling .

I'll tell ya what though, the comparision that really pisses me off is Bioshock. I just don't get that one at all.

Well, the only way I can see that is the aesthetic - the whole 50s music/atmosphere in a science fiction setting. Otherwise, yeah... they're pretty much different games.

I loved Fallout. I enjoyed Fallout 2. I was a SuperMod at Interplay/Black Isle and I owned a few shares in the company as well. Then came Herve Caen and down went a once great studio.

FO3 is indeed a completely different game. And not one I'll be playing. I'm not really into gaming at all anymore but I still don't care for Bethsoft.

Would have been nice to have seen the Black Isle version had it lived though. :(

I'm a huge fan of the originals, I know where you're coming from. I used to read documents I found on some Black Isle message board that went into great detail about the world behind Fallout, pages and pages of musing from the game developers about what lead to the world of Fallout, what happened between Fallout 1 and 2, what was going on in other areas of the world. I loved those games, I was a Fallout nut.

Fallout 3 is a sequel to those games in spirit. This is no Fallout Tactics and certainly not Brotherhood of Steel. It's a really good game. If I had to be totally nitpicky, yeah, it doesn't have the same sense of humor of the originals, the attempts at humor don't make me laugh the way they did back then.

I'm still early in the game, maybe a lot of my nitpicks (and they are nitpicks) will disappear over time. From one huge Fallout fan to another, give it a try someday. You'll be surprised how much love has gone into the creation of this game. Yeah, maybe its not the original creators of the wasteland, but it's people who clearly loved those classic games. The first time I left Vault 101 and took my first few steps in the wasteland, it was a rush, I felt like I was in a fully realized 3D world of the games I loved a decade ago. I still would've loved to play a completed version of "Van Buren", but hey, Black Isle is gone. What we got is as good as anything Black Isle may have accomplished though.

If you're just out of the gaming phase at least fest assured this is not just a quick cash grab, this is a respectful continuation to a revered franchise.

I'll have to check again to see if that section of the quest completed for me, but I was able to talk the Megaton clinic doctor into giving me Leo Stahl's medical information. I used that to blackmail Leo into giving me his mentats.

Played about 3 hours worth last night. Really want to take my time with this one so I've been through the vault and got to Megaton where I...

...couldn't bring myself to nuke the town. Call me a pussy (PUSSY!) but I'll replay it again someday and be an evil bastard. Pumping Mr Burke full of lead was fun though.

Not really explored much yet, apart from getting to know Megaton.

And you know what? It's so very much more than "Oblivion with guns". Aside from some superficial, cosmetic similarities and a familiar control layout, it's a totally different game and frankly the comparison is pretty lazy.

I couldn't help doing the same this go round. I was already leaning towards this evil side, karma-wise, it was too tempting to pass up. I loved when the explosion went off. I was listening to that "I don't want to set the world on fire" song on GNR when I pressed the button. The mood of the song, and being up their on the balcony watching it in the distance was perfect.

Agreed about Oblivion with guns. I think Firehawk's comparison to Stalker is pretty apt. I've thought that myself several times as I played it. Besides the mutants, radiation and all that, Fallout is also much more of a survivalist game like Stalker. Fallout is also shaping up to be much more of a shooter than I was expecting. It's quite action packed compared to Oblivion in some areas.

Superficially, I can see some similarities to Bioshock. The retro feel of the music, technology, etc. The plasmid ads in Bioshock have a similar feel to the Vault-tec ads and perk descriptions.

Well, The Evil Dead, I do hope you enjoy it. :)

I didn't care for Bethsoft's other titles and was rather worried when they got the license. That aside... I probably would give it a go so I could, at the worst, be an informed critic and at the best, hopefully enjoy. But there's another issue too... My pc just can't handle the specs.

And hey, almost anything is better than FO:OL. I can't believe Herve just won't let Interplay die. :D

It's still not quite a shooter though, because of the dice rolls in the background and the way the enemy AI behaves. If they're melee attackers, they'll just rush up to you like there's no tomorrow.

Yeah, I was referring more to the pacing of the action in some areas rather than the mechanics behind it.

I dunno, I guess I never got too far in Oblivion, but it feels very similar to me. There do definitely seem to be more hostiles wandering around, I'll admit.

Yes, I have problems with crashes, but they are not very frequent.

My advice on that would be to save often, manually.

Really addictive game as it goes on, and you get the hang of it.

Reason #563 why I gave up PC gaming and went to console gaming.

Aside from your edit (which sounds like a pretty annoying issue), how do you find the PS3 version holding up? Is there an install? Is it optional?

So far I haven't noticed any slow down in the wastes, the only instance I came across was strangely enough right at the start of the game, in the vault. This might me because there is an install (5GB) but it's transparent like Oblivion, that is to say that you don't have to do it up front, it does the install while you play (why doesn't everyone do this!?)

As I said the PS3 version (based on what I've seen of the 360 version) is slightly jaggier, other press folks have said the textures are "muddier" but I haven't noticed that. Hope that helps.

Is that Leo Stahl from Megaton? I'm kind of annoyed because I failed the Speech test and now I pretty much can't do anything about that quest. Ugh.

Yup, it's Leo Stahl. I'm focusing on speech, so I think I had a 73% chance of passing, I did and it said to "loot his stash" which I can't find!

I suppose that's a matter of opinion, I've found this and Oblivion to be a lot more intuitive than most RPG's.

Crazy, I didn't even have that option with the doc and speech skill is high... maybe my Karma is too high for me to have that option?

Like I said, I did take a bunch of mentats from the desk in the water treatment plant, but the quest still reads as active. It's kind of annoying!

I chose medical as one of my main stats when starting out. So there was an option to ask for medical information about Megaton residents. Or, I'm assuming that's why that option was there.

My speech skill is extremely low. I fail every single one of the speech skill options. Now that my small arms skill is maxed out, I should probably start investing some points there.

I like the game so far. It's nowhere near deserving of the 9.6 IGN gave it, but it's darned fun to play and it has lots of content.

I've actually been working on my Lock picking and computer hacking skills, the area I'm in has quite a few doors and such that have to have 25-50 skill to pick.

I have to admit now that I'm understanding the mechanics of this type of game play I'm having a good time.
I could still do less with all the questioning. If folks get on my nerves, I just shoot them.

Believe it or not, I'm finding I like the Chinese sword the best as my main weapon.
I tear just about everyone and everything up with it.
