Falling Skies - Season 5: Discussion and Spoilers

Since I'm one of the few people who enjoyed season 4, I've been looking forward to season 5. I'm working my way through a rewatch of S4, and it does have some issue but I don't think it's that bad.

Which one of the 1600 different plotlines —many of which went nowhere— that they packed into twelve episodes wasn't that bad? The space Hitler Youth? Lardass' Kool-Aid party character assassination cult? Lexi the Starchild? Mason Knievel? The Not-So-Great Escape? Apollo(gies) 13? Lexi in a hot potato? Anne of Arabia's death march? The smoke monster from Lost showing up? The alien overlord making it a personal grudgematch against Tom? The brotherly romantic triangle of angst? Having a show about two alien factions waging war on Earth and having 75% of the 2nd Mass killed off (again) by an exotic, out of this world... gas main explosion?

Well, when you put it that way...

:p

Seriously though, I think you hit upon just about every major thing that was basically wrong with this season. Binge-watching our way through it just seems to reinforce that notion.

Despite that, I'm holding out hope that this final season might have a resolution that wont boggle the imagination, or be jumping multiple sharks.

Of course, I suppose Tom could do that with his mask and motorcycle.

Just a reminder to everyone that the premier is tonight on TNT, at 10:00 P.M., EST. Due to my work schedule, I won't get to see it until tomorrow night, but I'm looking forward to seeing where it picks up and how Tom finds his way home from deep space.

:bolian:

One thing I'm looking forward to is that it seems they're getting back to killing aliens with machine guns. No more Rube Goldberg schemes.

Yeah, there were a lot of threads introduced and then kind of dropped off, but I still enjoy the characters and overall story.
The only I thought was rediclous was Tom racing around the Ghetto on the dirtbike. Tom never really stuck me as the dirtbike type.
I work again tonight so I won't be able to watch live.
TV Guide's description for the episode, Find Your Warrior:
Tom's Life is in Peril as his beamer drifts into space following a successful yet tragic mission to destroy the Espheni Power Core. Also: Anne reluctantly takes on a leadership role; and a new plan for winning the war is shared. The Season 5 opener.
I find it a little weird that all of the descriptions I've read are making a big deal out of Anne having to lead the 2nd Mass, when she already lead them while Tom, and the others where in the Espheni Ghetto.
My biggest fear going into the new season, is that whatever new alien Tom ran into at the end of the finale is going to suddenly give them some way to easily beat the Espheni. The whole show is supposed to be about humans fighting aliens, not some other race showing up and wiping out the aliens for the humans. I thought they came close to going into that territory with the Volm, but just barely managed to make it work. I'd hate to see them completely go there at the end.

I'm probably going to end up being wrong about this, but I really think that the being that Tom encountered is not a new alien at all, but rather what the Skitters really are like, before becoming harnessed and enslaved. Part of this is based on the fact that Tom seemed to recognize the being.

And I hope that it doesn't take the entire season to find out who or what they are.

Oooo, I like that idea. What we saw in was kind of insectoid, so that wouldn't be totally out of the realm of possibility. I was wondering if there is any significance to the fact that he heard a female voice.

Well, if they really are an insectoid race in their pure form, then Tom very well could've been talking to the queen of the hive.

Hey, I kinda like that idea!

Well, I thought since I had made it this far I would stick it out and finish the show, but the terrible, hackneyed writing tonight killed it for me. I'm Out.

So Anthony got really sad and then angry that Denny died, which is like the most character development he's had since the pilot.

Did the two characters ever talk to each other before tonight's episode?

Uh-oh, these comments don't bode well. Another eight hours and I'll get to see how bad it really is.

:scream:

Fine. I'll be the apologist.

I tuned in to see me some aliens get blow'd up real good. I got to see me some aliens get blow'd up real good. I can excuse The Librarian surviving Lost In Space and trying to be Braveheart, cause aliens got blow'd up real good.

It's a matter of perspective.

No need to be an apologist. Like I said, it's a modern Irwin Allen show. You just sit back and watch.

What was interesting to me was the way the new aliens are communicating with Tom. They appear as his wife, choose a specific memory that is an analogy to their message, and use history-based symbolism to give him information. Why not just communicate directly, like the Volm and the Esphani do? Are they saying that their minds are too alien for that kind of direct communication?

So now most of the Esphani have fled in the wake of the power station being destroyed. That should even things up a bit. But I don't really like this "embrace the rage" thing. It makes me wonder if the new aliens are really good guys. But it's an element of contemporary society, so maybe they're going to use it to make a statement.

To me it does not seem any worse than it already was. In my mind Season 2 was the last of the decent episodes. Season 3 on got stupid fast.

Now its just root until its over.

I finally gave up a few episodes into Season 3, and figured I'd try again with the S4 premere, but quit about half way through the episode. Terrible show...

I thought it was a pretty good premiere. We got some cool action scenes and some interesting set up with the telepathic communication.
Things should be interesting now that the Espheni have lost most of their tech.

Finally got to watch it this evening and to be honest, I didn't find it to be the train wreck that others had indicated. In fact, I found it more to my liking than Season 4's chaotic premier and it felt a bit more like what FS should be (at least to me).

Even though I knew Denny was going to buy the farm, I was still bummed to see her go.

And when Tom emptied his clip into the Overlord, all I could think of was 'Don't fuck with the Librarian'.

I'm actually psyched for next week.
