Re: Falling Skies: "Mutiny/Eight Hours" Discussion/Comments **Spoilers

The Aliens need to watch Star Trek about changing shield frequencies, they could definetly learn a thing or 2 from the Borg. LOL

If the Mechs could not get the job done why not send a ship to just bomb the school, unless the jamming signal could effect that too.

Besides the fact that in all sci-fi virtually the alien invaders also take the most difficult and arduous path to conquring our planet. An advanced technological species would have no trouble in developing and deploying bio-weapons of mass destruction, irradiating the biosphere or other ways to eliminate combatants en mass.

Strong ratings for finale, as expected.

Falling Skies Earns Big Audiences and Record-Setting Performances in Markets that Include The United Kingdom, Germany, Spain, Australia and Latin America

TNT’s Falling Skies[/B] – the #1 new basic cable series in the United States – ended its first season Sunday night with 5,623,000 viewers, plus an outstanding 2,531,000 adults 18-49 and 2,835,000 adults 25-54. These Live + Same Day deliveries mark the show’s best performance since the June 19 premiere. After scoring cable’s top new series launch of the year, Falling Skies ranks as basic cable’s #1 new show of 2011 among viewers and tops all scripted basic cable series this summer with adults 18-49 and 25-54. TNT has already renewed Falling Skies for a 10-episode second season, slated for 2012.

"Good shot." :rommie:

I thought these two episodes were really good. Tom's showdown with Weaver was excellent; a meeting of the minds, rather than a macho showdown. It reminded me a bit of Babylon 5. There was nice characterization all around.

The finale was also surprising and intriguing. I liked the twisted Close Encounters ending, especially given the involvement of Spielberg. I can't wait to see where that leads to.

And... the little girl that met Ricky was developing quite an exo-skeleton.

And, of course, Tom finally kissed the doc. :adore: :rommie:

Re: Falling Skies: "Mutiny/Eight Hours" Discussion/Comments **Spoilers

I was actually a little dissapoint in that I really don't see hpw thwy will make sense out of this (IE the aliens came with weapons that took out military bases, etc. in one shot; and withstood what must have been some major counterattacks by those of our military that first survived - yet now, a 'lucky shot' from a single RPHG manages to destroy an alien ship in flight, which in turn crashes into a hanger and takes out a wing of the structure.
The RPG shell was made of mech armor, so it could penetrate the ship.

And, of course, Tom finally kissed the doc. :adore: :rommie:

And right at the point where I was yelling at the TV, oh for farb's sake, KISS HER! :rommie: Finally, after years of yelling at the TV, somebody listens!

I love the way Tom has evolved from a fish-out-of-water type professor-with-a-gun into a credible soldier. It's been handled so subtlely, it would be easy to miss. Ditto for Weaver's evolution from one-dimensional military jackass into a military jackass with a heart. :D

Re: Falling Skies: "Mutiny/Eight Hours" Discussion/Comments **Spoilers

The RPG hitting the ship was absolutely ridiculous. That's a one in a million type shot, and at the very least they should have acknowledged that.

Re: Falling Skies: "Mutiny/Eight Hours" Discussion/Comments **Spoilers

Well Weaver did say "good shot".

Re: Falling Skies: "Mutiny/Eight Hours" Discussion/Comments **Spoilers

My theory is that if they hadn't been renewed for a second season, the military strike would have been successful!

Re: Falling Skies: "Mutiny/Eight Hours" Discussion/Comments **Spoilers

Well Weaver did say "good shot".
And a lot less of a stretch than what I was expecting - Tom goes in with the bombs on a SUICIDE MISSION and sets off the explosions, cue SEASON FINALE CLIFFHANGER ARGGGHHH!!!

Am I ever glad they didn't do that.

Re: Falling Skies: "Mutiny/Eight Hours" Discussion/Comments **Spoilers

I suspect the entire series would have been shot and the CG commissioned before the season even began airing.

Re: Falling Skies: "Mutiny/Eight Hours" Discussion/Comments **Spoilers

so, with falling skies' strong ratings do you think we might start seeing more sci-fi on tv?

Re: Falling Skies: "Mutiny/Eight Hours" Discussion/Comments **Spoilers

On basic and premium cable, yes. But Falling Skies' 5-6M viewership level wouldn't allow it to survive on broadcast, and I wouldn't make any assumptions that on broadcast, it would get a whole lot more viewers. Maybe 7-8M, but failed sci fi shows have gotten that and been cancelled. Falling Skies just reinforces that sci fi belongs on cable.

HBO is reportedly working with Trent Reznor on a sci fi series. I've heard rumblings about AMC developing something about first contact with aliens. FX is the prefect outlet for a space based sci fi series. Showtime needs to delve into sci fi as well.

Re: Falling Skies: "Mutiny/Eight Hours" Discussion/Comments **Spoilers

Well, with the success of Walking Dead and Falling Skies, we can probably expect more post-apocalyptic shows (probably involving a gerund in the title), but I don't know about a variety of SF or Fantasy. I doubt if it will help us get another Space Opera.

The Zooming Meteor Shower

The Hiccuping Megavolcano

The Hypnotically Swirling Black Hole Made by Those Idiots at CERN

another question I have is does anyone here think Falling Skies S2 might get a better time slot? or are the ratings the way they are because they put something decent in an otherwise dull timeslot?

"Timeslots" per se don't really matter bwith cable as they often (and did in Falling Skies case too) repeat a new episodes multiple times in a week; and all those ratings from the various slots are taken into account when producing a final ratings number.

It's only on Broadcast Network TV where ONLY the ratings of a given single timeslot are used in calculating ratings (and ad rates).

10pm Sunday night is a good timeslot - it's a bit of a violent show, not sure it should be any earlier. It's not like it's on Friday.

Re: Falling Skies: "Mutiny/Eight Hours" Discussion/Comments **Spoilers

On basic and premium cable, yes. But Falling Skies' 5-6M viewership level wouldn't allow it to survive on broadcast,

That would depend on the network and the timeslot expectations. Fringe, for example, was renewed with a lot less viewers than that.

Re: Falling Skies: "Mutiny/Eight Hours" Discussion/Comments **Spoilers

I've been thinking more about the Skinny's necks and the video that was posted that showed long skinny, robot-looking necks (Like the Jetsons' Maid Rosie), yet in the episode, that was cut out. I did however, see the neck curled in the back from a side-view that did make it in the episode(s). Generally, we are shown angles, where they have quite stout thick necks, but, in a couple of side views, that appears to be a chin (Or a helmet). So, do they have the skinny necks that got cut, or have they bit ret-conned to have solid thick necks, despite the couple of seconds proof otherwise that did make it into episodes.

If they do really have those long skinny necks, that seems to me to be a vulnerable point, that they won't leave exposed often.

Anyone visit an official/dedicated Falling Skies Board that might have seen this discussed elsewhere.

Re: Falling Skies: "Mutiny/Eight Hours" Discussion/Comments **Spoilers

They dont have the skinny necks any more. The overlords were completely redesigned after all the VFX were completed. All their shots were redone with the new fish-faced versions. It's a completely new digital model and the FX team started went back to square one for every shot where we see one of them. If any of the long-necked versions made it into the aired episodes, it was probably a cost-cutting measure for shots they figured theaudience would never notice. (As I understand it, the new shots cost quite a bit as it was.)

The work was completed quite recently, only a few weeks before the episodes in question aired, which is why the long necks were used in all the online clips.
