Fall Anime 2010

I'm watching Tiger and Bunny and need to check out Steins:Gate. I had my eye on it for a while, but college work is eating my free time.

Any good recommendations for modern stuff? I'm a big Macross and Gundam fan, loved GitS and Eva in it's day - I did enjoy Macross F and Gundam 00 after both those series had been stuck in mediocre-ville. I'm looking to expand my anime horizons a bit, but I also think I'm a bit too old school for some of the newer stuff out there...

Well if you liked Macross F and Gundam 00 then I guess Star Driver, Infinite Stratos and Code Geass are all up your ally.

Yeah, I'll definitely be checking out Unicorn shortly - hopefully it'll be a solid UC entry - hasn't been a good one since probably V Gundam...

Thanks for those recommendations. I've heard the name Code Geass bandied about for a while now - maybe I'll give that a go next.

What's the best way to go about getting fansubs now, btw? Torrents? I haven't hunted down fansubs since the days when you'd do one-for-one VHS trades via snail mail...

torrents are still the best way. that being said, many torrent sites have been shut down as of late. It's getting harder to track them down.

Yeah, not much of interest this season. I'm watching Hanasaku Iroha as well. Looks gorgeous, but there are so many unlikable characters I'm not sure I'll enjoy it that much. Hopefully some of those characters will end up being a bit less unpleasant than they first appear. Watched the first episode of Steins;Gate, but it seemed as if it was trying a bit too hard to be weird and inexplicable, and likely to fizzle out a bit the way Chaos;Head did. Guess it'll be mostly catching up on some shows for a while.

I have no doubt that Hanasaku Iroha will end up being a happyhappy show at the end. They're just in the "new girl in town" phase of the story.

Almost everything new is streaming mostly free online now.

Also, Code Geass is terrible. Maybe in a so bad it's good kind of way for some people though

I've been a little pressed for time so I haven't watched any anime at all recently.

Having said that, I did want to "continue" whenever they decided to show the continuation of Inuyasha on Adult Swim/Cartoon Network. I don't know how far off that is. Last I heard, they had started it in Japan but hadn't heard if Viz was still doing the American voice dub or not.

Since I saw this show only in the dubbed via Viz format, it's almost unthinkable for me to think about view Japanese subs. I've been waiting to hear all that "Kuh-Go-Meh" and "Keek-Yoh" exclamations from Inuyasha (not to mention the stringed background score for Naraku's nefarious deeds). Hopefully it's later this fall or something (when I might have more time).

You can do torrents, but most sub groups put out DDL links to sites like Fileserve, Rapidshare, and Megaupload for people who can't/won't use torrents.

Cool - may be a good way to watch a few early episodes and see if the full series is worth the investment.

I am curious why you think Code Geass is so awful, firehawk12. Everything I've read about it is pretty positive and the rating on Anime News Network is through the roof. I realize that's mostly fans rating it, but still... I'm curious to hear the dissenting opinion.

The first season was mostly boring, but the second season was really insulting... ranging from inane plot twists and to psychotic killer lesbian scientist.

It really was the first anime that I felt insulted my intelligence... and I have a really low bar when it comes to anime.

lol - okay, I may still give it a go and if it is so bad it's good maybe I'll just enjoy it for that.

A lot of its popularity, at least in Japan, is because Clamp designed the characters and there's a lot of fujyoshi bait. That probably happened here too, to some extent.

Sorry no. I am far from a Geass fan, but the popularity of Geass seems to stem less from the designs and more from its over the top characterization and plots.

The fujioshi is only influential in the Newtype Ratings. The fact that the show jumped from a dead night slot to a primetime one is due to its success in the general ratings.

Having finally gotten a chance to see Tiger and Bunny's second episode, I think that this show could be a massive success if imported, dubbed, and given a well advertised release over here. Unless the writers/animators go off the rails in the next few episodes and tons of fanservice and random weirdness, they've got a rather unique superhero show that can appeal to a wider audience than most other anime.
